how is the new version? I saw lots of not so great reviews when it came out that it scared me away from buying 2024. However, now my 2020 won't even load anymore so I'm sort of stuck.
When you say it won't load, does it get like 50 - 90% on the load screen then just dumps you back to the desktop? There's a DirectX issue with DX11 causing 2020 (and 2024) to crash on load and make sure you have it set to DX12. If you have the NVidia control panel you can change the setting for FS through there and fingers crossed it works for you. I do a lot of paint mods so I like to keep both versions as 2020 is easier to work in, see rant below, and when I installed them I couldn't get 2020 to load and turns out it was a DirectX issue.
Now, the rant...
The UI is hot garbage. The whole airplane selection menu is atrociously over complicated and they can't get it to load preprogramed tail numbers without needless swapping into and out of the selection menu. While 2020 planes can, for the most part, drop right into 2024, because the menu structure is different it makes the already crummy airplane selection UI even more bonkers. They made some other (IMO negative) changes to the overall menu structure but the issues aren't really an issue like the airplane selection menu. For, I'm sure, reasons, they switched not only the file and folder format for repaints and models but they also changed the textures from DDS to KTX2. Not really an issue but a paint in the backside for people like me that do repaints it's a massive time suck making them format correctly. Some developers kept the old format which messes with the UI but makes planes 2020 and 2024 compatible. Others went full on 2024 and while I can see why, it makes converting paints a right royal pain in the backside.
Overall it's been HEAVILY optimized for consoles. In fact, there's now a PS5 version. This has the effect of making it a great game, but horrible as a hack, mod, and customize simulator that lots of long time users got used to dealing with. It's heavily loaded with even more game/mission which, if you're into that, fine, but otherwise for someone like me that uses it for free flight to do what I want I have to spend a LOT of time disabling or removing the bloat that comes with all that. The default ATC is still useless and almost comical at times, but I gave up using ATC and traffic way back in P3D days because those two caused more sim crash to desktop than everything else combined. Haven't missed them and don't have them enabled.
Graphic wise, it's an improvement over 2020. The clouds look less volcanic-ash like (though still far from perfect) but the lighting has gotten a lot better and just overall the sim looks shaper. Default and Marketplace add-ons have streaming options which can greatly reduce hard drive space if that's a concern. Makes for a little bit of lag in loading detailed textures at time even with a 1GBPS connection but that could also be my house with four people all streaming simultaneously. It's a problem though if you have data limits through your ISP though, especially if you have the detail settings cranked up.
I honestly wish they had done a massive update to 2020 with the enhanced graphics while doing a separate console only version with 2024, as the more they develop it for console the more restricted the PC version becomes in terms of modding. But, I also have been doing all my actual flying in 2024 and just use 2020 as a test rig for paints so I can't say I'll be going back any time soon.
