Jacket restriping

That's what she said
Swung by the Stop-Over Store the other day to see how much it would cost to have my jacket restriped (switched airlines, need to go from gold to silver) and was pretty surprised to be quoted $75 for the work. Any opinion on this? Seems pretty steep to me. I'm thinking of just going to a normal tailor, but I don't want it to look like crap either...

I did my restriping myself when we did our uniform changeover in 1997. The stripes went from a small red/white/blue strip to a gold & white stripe. I VERY CAREFULLY used a seam ripper to open up the seam where the strip was sewn in, and started removing the stripe from there. Carefully remove all stitching that holds the stripe in place, sew in new stripe, and close up the seam.

If you don't want to do it yourself, $75 is not out of line for that type of work to be done, and a place like that is used to doing such work and will do a good job.

That's cheap!! I'd have paid $35 to have not had to do mine...

Is that for changing stripes though, or just adding a stripe?

The airline doesn't give you a uniform?

In the case of a uniform switch, it may be cheaper for the company to issue new stripes instead of issuing new jackets. Such was the case for the AA/Eagle F/A uniforms in 1997. New shirts & sweaters, which, per CBA were given to us at no charge, but instead of replacing our jackets they issued us a wad of striping material, which it was up to us to "do" something with. Either take it to a tailor or do it ourselves. There were only minor changes to the skirts and pants, so those were not re-issued.

For the Delta pilots who were former Navy officers, the Delta pilot jacket is exactly the same as the Navy dress uniform jacket. So instead of buying a new jacket (which no, Delta does not pay for newhire pilot uniforms) Navy guys will often just take their jackets in to have re-striped. (There may be a lapel tuck or two involved too.)

I'm realizing I am lucky to be at the little airline I am! Free uniforms every year, free medical and not too bad of pay haha.

If they could just get an airplane, you'd be set!
Haha, they have them just no flying under 121 yet. They put me back in the Dash out of seniority though and the union is of no help though. Doesn't matter much since it might not be around for much longer.

Haha that'd be expecting a lot. Even a uniform allowance would be nice!

Maybe I'll give Crew Outfitters a buzz, I've been impressed with them in the past.

AMR had a "uniform allowance" It was in the form of "points" as money to spend. I forget now how many points we got per year, and how much the pieces cost. It was a "use it or lose it" thing, where if you didn't spend your points they didn't carry over. It wasn't a lot, but enough to buy a new pair of pants or two a year.

When there was a uniform change,( a "new" uniform issued, like when we got the new shirts in 1997) then it was required by the CBA for the company to give us, at no charge, a "full" compliment of the new uniforms. I think that ended up being like 5 shirts, a sweater and a roll of striping for the jacket/dress sleeves since the pants & skirts didn't change significantly.
