It’s sad because it’s true.

Starting the video showing their feet walking…camera pans up to show them proudly walking in the terminal… breakbeat… camera facing the pilot “heroically” flying an Airbus above 1000’, fully in “flight mode”, literally doing nothing because it’s fly by wire.

Oontz oontz oontz.

Or the voiceover videos about strength and persistence…

I’m losing the ability to take us seriously.
This is where I almost spit my Mr.Pibb out 🤣

Is all I can think of when I see these influencer videos.

Where does this come from?!?! Several guys at my shop say it and it grates on my nerves every time. They all happen to have military backgrounds. I've never bothered to call them out on it, only cringe and move on.

I’m just happy someone is asking for a clearance, writing it down, generally being dutiful about putting in the FMC and overall being super helpful. I don’t really care how they do it.

It's because on the ATC end, after you call for your clearance, ATC says "clearance on request". Somehow, pilots thought that they should say what ATC says. It grated on me, too, but there are bigger battles to fight. Pilot can say "request clearance". ATC says "clearance on request".

Bigger battles to fight is why I cringe and move on. Still, doesn't make it right. It's poor phraseology. No different from "with you" or "taking the active" at an untowered airport.

I just simply say “[callsign], clearance to [destination airport] with [atis code]”. Seems easy enough. IFR is assumed, and the whole reason I’m calling clearance delivery anyway. Otherwise VFR and direction of flight would be stated, if it’s an airport that requires VFRs to also call clearance delivery.

But yeah, as Don said, pilots got this “clearance on request” thing, which makes no sense, because the clearance delivery person is calling (making a request) for your clearance…as it’s not sitting right there in front of them.

You guys laugh, but this phraseology is standard at any naval air station today. You say "[insert stereo routing] clearance on request". They say "I have your clearance on request". And then a couple mins later depending on how busy they are, they say "XXX I have your clearance, advise when ready to copy". And then you say "ready to copy".....and then they read it to you. I'd be interested to know what takes several minutes on their end, perhaps it is just to play the game?

Nothing new. The whole “clearance on request” hilarity has been going on since before I started flying.

This point has been made on aviation forums even before 1200 baud. Just slower.

Sometime in the last year I worked with an FO who was former military. Had been here just about a year. We’re departing ORD for…I dunno, probably Anchorage. He kept telling me when he was getting an updated ATIS, which I thought was weird. Most people just send for it and announce only if anything has changed. So after the 3rd time I realized he was actually tuning the frequency and LISTENING to it. Part of me wanted to ask, but I make a conscious effort to let guys do it their way unless it conflicts with safety or procedure. I mean…he HAD to know…right?
