It\'s official.....

....I'm out of the flying game. I've accepted an engineering position with Boeing. It has been a long and hard decision but ultimately came down to what quality of life my wife and I want.
After instructing for a couple years and flying for a freight company, I've decided the life of hotels and uncertainty of a job are not worth the extreme low pay. Sure, the pay increases over time but I cannot deal with the uncertainty the job entails.
So here's one less competitor for all you jetcareers. Perhaps one less person willing to work for $19k/year will increase the pay for the rest of you guys and gals starting out.
I will of course still instruct on the side and will always scan these message boards for valuable information.
Best of luck to everyone out there....

So where is this job located at? And if you don't mind me asking, how much more of an increase in pay is it for you?

Re: It\'s official.....

It'll be in Seattle and an INCREASE of $45k/year above what I've made now as an instructor starting out. Not to mention full benefits, pension, etc....

Best of luck. I've come close to deciding to do the same thing. I am making too darn much money doing what I'm doing to go back to living like I'm in college.

I'm finishing my CFIs and fully plan on teaching out of my airport, part time. I also have the potential to get a side flying gig through my current (marketing) position for an architecture firm. I can keep my hand in flying, and I can avoid spending the next several years barely scraping by and not contributing anything to my retirement, which at age 31, was a big factor in my decision. Especially given that a lot of us my age just may be responsible for funding our retirements completely.

Hey sbe,
I've been wondering what you've been up to. I know we've been talking about this flying thing for the past couple years and was wondering if you've taken the plunge yet.

Its good to hear you're finishing up your instructor ratings. Best of luck with whatever you decide. I'm glad to finally come to terms that I will always instruct part time but not make flying my bread and butter.

Heya man,

Too bad to hear that you are going to drop the full time flying thing, but no one can tell you that you have not given it your all. You have certinally gone balls out on this flying gig and have come a long way with it, and you are in as good of a position as any to decide that it's not for you. Keep in touch around here man!

Cheers
