Its official!...747..

I love the website, I loathe the forum.

Years ago, I watched a bunch of 12 year olds argue with DE727UPS about something. I can't remember what it was, but it was sick.

A few years back, I blew a tire at an airport and one of the users made a statement that was patently false about how it happened. I tried to correct him without saying "Hey... uh... that was ME!" but you know, his dad was a pilot, he had so many hours flying on the MD-90, he was the expert, yadda yadda yadda.

I'm a little draconian at times on how I deal with 'heavy on opinion/light on experience' users that engage in forum combat, primarily because I want to steer the it away from being like their forums.

But the pictures? Primo.

No offense taken to any of the questions you posed. I really am basing my answers on what I have read at airliners.net and others websites.

I personaly think that Boeing must redesign the wing and bring in more economial engines if they want to accomplish the goals they have set. I mean think about it. As it stands right now the wings on the 747-400, as extended as they are, don't help it much in lift (actually they do, but I am comparing it to the possiblity of a 777/787 style wing).

According to the Boeing website, will have an ehanced wing design as well as the new GE engines....

http://747.newairplane.com/

The 777 wings were maximized for that airframe, as well as the wing on the 787. To get wing and maximize it for the 747-800, that takes money & research, while you are at it, might as well, go for a brand new aircraft.

My guess, is that they are going to do some tweaking with the present 747 wing, less time & less money.

Increasing the range of the 747-800 and approving efficiency, will be enough to get some of the cargo carriers excited.

Carriers like Nippon Cargo Airlines, Cargolux & other potential cargo carriers will probably only fly 747 aircraft due to the nose loader for oversized cargo...

What I have not heard yet, if the 747-800 will keep the same type rating as the 747-400?

I would like to ask one thing about the wing. Don't you think that wing design, especially with the leading edge flaps that are called "catipillers", at least that is what one engineer reffered to them when I worked in Commodore Aviation in miami, are not practical? I mean that come from right under wing, as compared to the new aircrafts from boeing they all slide down from the top of the wing.

I am not to knowlegeable in this area, but if someone could clarify any mistakes I made as far as words I used I would greatly appreciate it.

I believe those are called Krueger flaps. Both the 747, and 737 are the only production aircraft to have them. The 727 has them as well.
And I believe that they are not high lift devices. In direct comparison to the standard leading edge slats.

The 747 has those types of flaps on the whole wing, while the 737 and 727 have it closer to the fuselage. I think that for the new 747 that should be changed because, to me, it seems like it is old techonology. I mean how could that work. When you look at the new leadings edge slats that fall into perfect harmony, at least it seems like it. With the Krueger flaps that have to come around into position. Isn't that hard on them?

Same here. Like the photography hate the forum. One thing I do find annoying is the captions people put for the photographs. ( I'm a photographer of many years ).... I can not stand captions that say something to the effect of: "this photo is dedicated to my dead dog butch and this marks the 3rd year of his passing... blah blah blah ( of course I am pushing the example a bit, but not by much ) Just put in basic caption info and I don't really care about the extra nonsense.

Kind of looks like Boeing is doing with the A380 was Airbus did with the 787, eh? No bias by the posters on this site, won't bother going back to look at all the bashing that many here did of the A350....

As for competing with the A380, due to the design, the A380 will be more spacious, particularly the upper deck, but also the overall cabin interior. Also, the A380 will be a better freighter due to having the ability to carry freight on the upper deck. The 747 is just not compatible with the FedEx system due to the layout, and there is nothing that they can do about that.

Boeing bashing...you want Boeing bashing I'll give ya Boeing bashing. Boeing has lost their imagination and their daring that made them an American symbol to be reckoned in the 50's-70's.

The 747 was considered a huge gamble/risk for Boeing in the 70's.It was a profitable gamble. Now Boeing seems to have lost their imagination and is making "safe" bets by fleshing out 30 yr. old designs to extend their life.

When the A380 was first introduced I had hope that Boeing would come up with a brand new design to compete with the A380.

I'm against multiple redesigns of the same platform be it Airbus or Boeing.
I think new designs like the A380 and the 787 help further innovate design & technology in aircraft.
