There's just simply not that many licensed dispatchers out there who aren't already at a major. Probably around 500 at the regionals collectively, and that's on the high side. Throw in all the other 135, supplemental guys and there's really just not that many to be getting 1,000s of apps.

One thing to think about is how many people have the license but aren't currently dispatching. I didn't start until a year and a half after I had the license. I know of others as well.

As far as I know, from my dispatch school, of the 5 of us in class, I am the only one to ever dispatch a flight

Very true. The major that I'm employed with had many applications from internal candidates who have their license and aren't actively dispatching because they are in good career positions.

Only 5 in the class? Wow! We had about 35 in mine and id say maybe 10-15 are dispatching. That's a tiny class. Wish I could have had that much one on one
 
I went to a brand new dispatch school and there was only one other person in class with me. As far as I know, between the two of us, I was the only one who is actually dispatching.

Then they wouldn't be qualified since United recommends 2 years of experience. Hence why thousands aren't applying. Sans internals of course.
 
The 450 number might also only be the number that got past HR. Honestly I dont remember exactly what they said...so it may have been 450 qualified candidates...or just applicants. Either way, that's still plenty of competition for the job.
 
You are correct either way it's a ton of competition. The last go around I noticed they had a 1 year international DX experience added on to there as well
