did a flight today in the Cessna 310 using David Clarks 13-4 (left Bose in another airplane), my ears are still ringing. Its not worth your hearing loss! Bose is by far the best!![]()
My sister-in-law used to be a designer for Bose. She designed almost all of the QC headsets and we tried to get management to sign off on a jet headset version of the QC3. Bose did not think there would be a market for that though.

I Love when people comment about the cost to manufacture something... without a real understanding of what it costs to bring a tested product to market... It can be pretty funny.
Here is another one for you, lots of people like to shoot... most know what a red dot sight is. Unit cost on a mil spec one at a shop floor is usually 4-800 for a nice one. Guess what the total part cost is?$7-8 bucks... next time you buy yourself a docop, or eotec you might just want to "throw up a little" That car you're driving? guess how much the parts cost for that?
I've actually sourced and built a headset for my self... never quite worked out, and I haven't had the time to fiddle with it... my problems being the opamp driving the anr circuit doesn't have a high enough cycle rate to cancel out the full frequency range that I want... I dumped prob. $300 into the project so far. I can assure you that you don't want to just go buy the parts and put it together yourself.
All being fair, I had the Bose X for A long time, and loved them. I tried the zulu's.. and kinda had a "ehh" feeling about them. I ended up with the UflyMike and QC2, and have found that to be the best for me, commuting and flying. to each their own.

Yes and no in this case. Were there R&D costs associated with the device? Certainly. Has the company LONG since amortized those costs? Absolutely. At this point, their profit margin is obscene.
If I can make any parallel to the X based on Bose's consumer audio products,
the cost to produce a Zulu or Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic headset is far greater than the X, which is another reason why I refuse to ever give Bose a dime of my money.
Now, getting back on point- Nowhere is technological obsolescence more prevalent than in the computer industry. Intel spends a ton of money developing the next computer chip, brings it to market for $1000, knowing full well the early adopters will pay that price. 6 months later, the cost has dropped to $500. One year later, the same chip is now $300, while the new chip that just came out is priced at $1000 again. Intel can do this, because their R&D costs were covered during the initial run of the chips at the higher price point. The actual cost to produce the chip is under $100. So, even at the tail end of the chip's life, it is still producing profit for the company.
Given that the X has been around for roughly a decade, its price should have dropped YEARS ago as the R&D costs were paid for eons ago. The price never dropped since they know the industry will support it.
This healthy profit margin is also why Lightspeed can "afford" to buy back your older headset, at full retail value, during a trade on a Zulu.

Some people dont really care what the price is as long as they get a good headset, Im one of them guys. Im not gonna tear Bose apart when they are the ones that dramatically made my life better. My days of ringing ears and headaches are over.
