ALERT Italian fighter jets broke sound barrier today to intercept Air France Boeing 777 to Paris

Double sonic boom heard were heard over Italy after two Italian Air Force Eurofighters were scrambled from Istrana Air Base.

The fighter jets were scrambled to intercept Air France Boeing 777-300ER (reg. F-GZNF) which lost radio contact with ATC.

The Eurofighters intercepted the French aircraft over the skies of Lombardy where they identified the civil plane and made sure that the crew established regular radio contacts with the air traffic authorities.

The fighter jets breaking the sound barrier created panic in North Italy. Police received many phone calls.

The sonic booms made the windows of a school in Triuggio to crack. In the area of Bergamo, the roars were so strong as to trigger, for precautionary purposes, the evacuation of some schools and the court.

In Monza, many people who have left their homes for fear have flocked to the streets, and even here some schools have brought pupils out into the courtyards.
 
a) That's totally awesome. The sound of Freedom creates feelings inside people that they themselves cannot explain.

I live right under VR-1074. I get to hear the sound of freedom on a regular basis. There is no noise quite like a flight of Harriers out of Cherry Point or New River tear assing over the house at midnight no more than 200ft off the deck. Its fracking awesome!

Too bad the EA-6 Prowlers are just recently gone. the last of the straight-turbojet (no fan bypass crap) turn-JP-into-noise, non-Stage 1 noise compliant, sound of freedom jets in our inventory.

At least they are finally doing it with a twin engine jet. The Italians used to go screaming across the boot at low altitude in F-104s and it didn’t work out for a lot of them unfortunately.

Used to see their 104s while using the range at Decimomannu back in the day. Can't beat the hard-light afterburners.

We had a few of those go by in the past!

There are still 2 or 3 squadrons of them left at Cherry Point (granted, a EA-6B squadron is nowhere near as big as any other squadron). They still do deployments to Turkey and/or Al Udeid. They'll be gone real soon though. The family truckster is painfully loud when it takes off.

I was on a tour once heading to Reno and a pair of Prowlers trolled us on the 95 at about 50 feet or less. The sound was amazing. They made two passes:). I'm guessing they were training in Fallon.

They're here at KIWA nearly every weekend. It's fun watching them blast off.
 
The A model Harrier was the true compact sports car model as compared to the current B models. Nimble, quick, and unforgiving.

Yeah it was funny at a past job to listen to the Harrier guy on staff talk about how whenever he had to do DACT training with any exercise he always felt like the slow fat kid finding out todays gym class was dodgeball.

Dude, we have wheels on the OUTSIDE of our airplane with the gear UP! Air-to air isn't really the point. My job is moving mud. If I have to do DACT, I'm landing and finding the nearest Hornet or C-model Eagle guy and punching him in the junk. The good news is if I go low they're never catching me.

I've done LOTS of KIWA ops. The blast off would be funner, but we're a bit handcuffed by the Class B. I've also done EVEN MORE KILM Ops. They're east and west coast analogues for KNKT and KNYL. I'd enjoy a meet and greet with any of you guys when we're out and about. The bar at the KIWA FBO is a nice touch. The planespotters on the knoll there are a little extra sometimes, but it's nice to see people interested.

Unforgiving is a gigantic understatement. Modern VSTOL aviation stands upon the shoulders of some extremely brave individuals. We an approximate A characteristics in the B in VSTOL. I don't think the F35B guys can ever understand that on a visceral level.

As for nimble and quick, the A can out-run the B because of the B's bubble canopy, but a B can turn inside an A's circle. The B's latest Pegasus is also disgustingly bigger than the A's.

The tanks are one button away from gone under the right conditions. I have 9X and AMRAAM now (which your acquaintance didn't have) so I'll turn if I have to. Still not my job, though.

I am a stranger in a strange land in the helicopter world. I assume you mean the W-model Cobra. I don't think you'll see them carrying too many sidewinders.
