It just gets worse at JFK...

I'm not in the captains shoes, but it seems the health and safety of the pax are more important than a take-off slot... I wonder why they didn't just head back to the gate and cancel the flight. FWIW, it was very hot in NYC this weekend, I had the AC on all the time.

That crew was asinine. Four hours on the ramp with no air? Not on my watch.

You know, it's going to take irate customers throwing open emergency exits and spilling out onto active taxiways before this kind of thing is put to an end. There is no excuse for that to happen, and it's an embarassment to us all.

we had to taxi for about 30mins with no A/C in BOS a few weeks ago, i couldn't imagine hours with no movement and no ac on a hot day. scary. jfk is a mess at times, just plain unacceptable in my opinion.

No AC?

Probably mishandled or bad ac. No AC means no pressurization.

It could also be connected to the ground unit.

Either way I would open an emergency exit - if they complained I would accuse them of kidnapping.

As a pilot based at JFK, JFK is a mess.

You can't both scream for "Free Market!" in one of the world's largest markets and not have what happens at JFK on a daily basis. Trains have slots because two-plus trains can't occupy the same track simultaneously, but that concept seems to be lost on the industry.

But if you bring slot controls, John Q Public is going to scream bloody murder about the requisite increase in fares because of the scarcity of flights and wants to fly transcon for $49 on FF miles.

If one airline throttles back a bit to create a more realistic schedule for the time period, another airline is going to cram new flights into that timeframe to capitalize.

They probably had a deferred APU. Its not a huge deal unless you get ground delays, the engines running at idle just don't have enough pressure to effectively cool the cabin or cockpit. That being said, if they saw the cabin temp get above 30 degrees C, then they should of returned to the gate. If there was a line, they may not of been able to turn around...who knows.

Likely a CRJ-100. With a deferred APU and only one engine turning, I can see how the A/C would have been technically 'operational' but effectively nonexistent. Doug was right- bad and mishandled.

JFK-EWR-LGA is utterly horrible to fly into after 3pm. It's a combination of too many aircraft, greedy airlines, and ticked-off controllers. If any one of those things gives, there would be some relief. But with turboprops coming to EWR, I just think things will just get worsre and worse till they pop. With any luck, I'll be back in Texas by then.

I have to give props to a Chautauqua crew a few weeks ago in BTR. It was a CRJ with no A/C. They were going to be on a ground delay for 30mins, and instead of waiting, they returned to the gate, and allowed people off, due to "the comfort, and safety of the customers". In too many similiar situations, it seems people have been left to bake in the airplane.

Why on earth would you agree to an interview?

At AMR we wouldn't have been operating within company policy to allow any sort of interview. We're prohibited (via company policy) from making any statements on behalf of AMR unless given specific permission.

The article seems to imply that the video and audio recording device were concealed during the guy's confrontation of the crew (its pretty compact). To further guess, the cops were probably called because of his persistentce in refusing to stow the camera after it was discovered and the request to not be filmed was made.

"People were passing out and vomiting...".

If it's really that bad...why don't people start popping emergency exits?

Definitely aren't taking off then.

The exits can also be put back in from the inside of a CRJ.

Back when I was in BGR a Pinnacle crew poped it to look at the window. A passenger saw a string and thought it was a crack. Apparently she heard a bang too.

I meant tossing the emergency exit out onto the ground (if the situation is really as bad as these people claim). I've taken them off in an ERJ before, I assume a CRJ's aren't attached once opened either.

A/C had defered APU. As long as both PACS are operational we can operate with no APU. The CA should have returned to the gate, especially with sick passengers. Screw the slot time!

Yeah that's a mx issue! It has to be signed off in the mx log by mx when the door is removed and replaced. Those PCL guys are lucky no one heard about it.
