An Asiana Airlines Airbus A330-323 (HL7792) and a THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A321-231 (TC-JMM) suffered substantial damage in a ground contact accident at Istanbul-Atatürk International Airport, Turkey.
The Airbus A321 had arrived from Ercan as flight TK969 and turned towards the gate at Terminal A at 14:47 UTC. The aircraft stopped about 30 meters before the intended parking position at the gate.
At the same time the Airbus A330 had commenced taxiing along taxiway G to the runway. Flight OZ552 was returning to Seoul, South Korea. While taxiing past the A321, the right hand wing tip impacted the the vertical stabilizer of TK969.
The A321's vertical stabilizer was knocked over entirely and the A330's wing tip sustained serious damage.

 
I like the guy in the bottom of the picture. It takes him a few moments before he springs into action.

Can you even see the wingtip from the flight deck?

I know a friend works for a corporate flight department and they put a yellow stripe on the side window as a guide for where the wingtip is.

You can see about 15 feet of the wing on the 330.

But it was on the FO's side and it was Asiana, so who knows.

Was there ever any proof that anyone wasn't qualified to be in the seat they were in?

Because if not, I'd be happy to never hear what amounts to asian driver jokes ever again.

Easy tiger. (or was that an asian joke?)

Asiana still has a PIC is god cultural issue that is pretty well documented. The FO was most likely fully qualified. The question is, did the captain listen to them if they called out the TK tail.
 
I guess the tail is of the breakaway variety.


Heck the Crj tail stayed on when the a380 had a whack at it.

Wonder how they fix that?

Does the entire aft section need to be replaced of can you simply mount a new vertical piece?

Assume the manufacture would need to do the repair or at least over see it?

That aircraft will be off the line for a really long time.

One of the Malcom Gladwell books I read spoke to the culture at Korean or (Asian) airlines. You do not question the captain, regardless. Interesting yet troubling cultural aspect given the industry....

If I remember to Korean SFO accident correctly.

The 1st officer had military rank over the Captain and that created another problem.
