Island Air Captain - - Honolulu, Hawaii

On that note, a word of caution to anyone applying here. Like he said, try Hawaiian first, you may get the job if you're qualified for this job. Secondly, Island Air is about to replace their entire fleet. Not sure how new-hires would fit into this timeline. You could end up with 2 type ratings or you may end up sitting around waiting, or having to go through 2 training courses that you don't want to, etc. Just passing info along...

By applying?

Good luck. Getting a job there is like winning the powerball. I worked with guys out in the islands that had been trying to get on forever. One of my captains who is as Hawaiian as they come (preferential treatment for locals) had been through the process 5 times and no job yet.

I think their process works very well. I don't think they have the preferential treatment like everyone thinks they do. They look to hire quality individuals and it shows.

Whats Island Air getting now? CRJs? There's alot of uncertainty there that I don't like between Island Air and the looming competition coming from Ohana if they ever get their Shoots together.

99% sure it's going to be Q400's because they are on the certificate. The Honolulu FSDO is so slow on everything which we found out with the ATRs and Hawaiian is learning now with Ohana that I doubt it would be a new type. The only way I see CRJs would be if Island Air buys the Go! certificate which I don't know if that is even a separate certificate.

Is Island Air pretty firm on having an ATP for the SIC position? I only have written completed and all my experience is 135 time.

The chief said after the new year for first classes.

I would suggest talking to the chief with malasadas in hand.

Is buy him stock, as much as I wanna go to the jets, that Damn dirty prop fever won't let go. Some reason my chances seem better with Island than Hawaiian but who the heck knows.

How much would a direct-entry-captain make?

Edit: I just looked at their jobs page... the Captain position is listed. Starting pay is apparently 50.83/hour. Tempting.

Why??? That's weak for part 121 PIC, do you know how much cost of living is in Hawaii?

1) It's a raise from what I make now.
2) I get no PIC time now, nor will I in the near future at my current employer.
3) I don't live in HI, and the city I live in isn't much cheaper anyway.
4) I like tropical islands.

Of course there are a host of reasons that it's a very unattractive option as well.

I used to work for the company and it is a great opportunity to get 121 PIC time.

I had an apartment in Waikiki with free utilities, parking and cable for $1000 a month. There are other places available around the island if you would like a bigger place for about the same price. Hawaii living really wasn't that much more expensive then SoCal or Seattle.

I thought PIC interviews were suppose to be this week, or did they happen.
I was offered an interview 11/20-11/22... couldn't make it happen due to work. I'd love to work for these folks and it would be an easy commute at worst for me.
