I read on one of the sites that video shows one of the pilots being killed by the Turkish militants in the area, aka, the ones the US is supporting.
Take it with a grain of salt, and I really hope it's not true, but it's been reported.
Associated Press and Reuters now reporting one dead as well.....
".....Jahed Ahmad, a spokesman the 10th Coast Division, an insurgent group in Syria, said its forces fired at the Russian pilots as they descended. One was dead when he reached the ground, Ahmad told The Associated Press. The group released a video showing gunmen standing around a blond man in aviator gear whose face was bruised and appeared dead....."

Yeah theres a pretty nasty picture floating around the Internet already that is apparently one of the deceased pilots. Also reading the rebel forces were shooting at the pilots while floating down under canopy, and/or shooting them when hitting the ground. Who knows what really happened but no matter what its not good.
The Turkish are ISIS sympathizers if not subtle supporters, as ISIS is against the Kurds, whom the Turks hate. Yet the Turks want to play both sides of the table in this whole situation. Rumors that the Turks buy or finanace oil from ISIS.
Not a wise escalation, especially if the border incursion was either very brief (accidental) or non-existant. If the jet was indeed shot down over Syria, the Turks will have hell to pay. And if the Russians go after the Turks, NATO better be prepared to hang them out to dry, or else get dragged into having to clean up another fine Turkish mess.
And since we stupidly agreed to be based out of Turkey and flying missions against ISIS to support the Kurds (whom the Turks go kill after we return from our missions), we'll be caught in the middle of this with the Turks assuming we're there and ready to help them.

If this jet was indeed shot down over Syrian airspace by the Turks, incursion or not, Russia will be forced to do something. Retaliation of some kind.
If that retaliation invokes an Article V NATO defense by us, with our F-15C/E aircraft based in theatre, then we will have USAF planes alongside Turk planes engaging Russian planes over Turk/Syria airspace.
Turkey will force us to pay the bar tab for drinks we neither ordered, nor wanted.

We needed to hang Turkey out to dry a long time ago for attacking the Kurds as it is. You could also make the argument that with France looking for a coalition of both the west and Russia against ISIS, the Kurds would probably end up with a state at the end of the deal. Something Turkey really doesn't want and could sabotage by this action.
And I don't think there's any rumor that Turkey buys ISIS oil. It's well known. They are against us in this in every facet except letting us put our airplanes on their soil and in their airspace.

Worst part is, if that jet was indeed shot down over Syrian airspace by Turkish forces, Putin has every legal right to retaliate and hand Turkey it's ass on a platter.
Unfortunately, we'd be forced to defend.
Now, the Pentagon has come out supporting the Turkish version of events, with the jet being deep inside Turkish airspace.
However, anymore, I believe Baghdad Bob for accurate news reporting far more than I believe the vast majority of Pentagon spokespersons.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is this? What prevents the US or any other semi-involved nation from simply telling Turkey to pound sand?

They have for years supported ISIS (and other terrorist groups like Jabhat al-Nusra) through pipelines, black market oil sales, letting them use Turkey as a route to other countries including Syria, arms smuggling, you name it. The Kurds are Islamic State’s ideological opposites. Turkey is more than willing to aid ISIS in killing/defeating the Kurds. Turkey like the Sudis have been playing both sides of the fence for a long damn time. We (and this includes NATO) are fools to have EVER called them our allies.
We have been, and still are, on the wrong side of that fight and supporting the wrong people.
