Is The C182 A Good First Airplane

(Sorry to dredge this thread up again)

A few more words of wisdom on flying Skylanes from probably the smartest guy I personally know, whose judgment on the subject I trust implicitly:

[ QUOTE ]
on my L model (equipped with a Horton STOL kit), at 40 degrees of flaps, the tailplane will stall about 5mph before the main wing does, causing the nose to pitch down suddenly. If the mains are only a couple of inches above the runway, then no harm is done. However, if you let this happen 6ft above the runway, you would be replacing a firewall...

[/ QUOTE ]So what we have now is a situation that, in order to avoid it, requires a sufficiently well-executed approach such that a) 40 degrees of flaps are not necessary, and b) that the pilot has a solid handle on the airspeed -- neither of which are a particular forte of student pilots.
