yea... but driving 5 miles over the speed limit generally won't kill you...getting behind the wheel with alchohol in your system will.. which is why the laws are much harsher for those disobeying the alchohol rules.mtsu_av8er said:So is driving 5 miles over the limit . . .
personally, i think if your caught, in public, with possession and underage you really should have a nice hefty charge and do some serious community service or something because apparently, the rules are being broken all over the place as far as alchohol is concerned and that just means more dui drivers, more kids killed on the street by drunk drivers, so on and so forth....but, that's just me.. when i drank underage, i walked back to my dorm room or apartment...i called a cab, i drank in private with friends or i didn't drink. it's just doesn't appear to be the same with a lot of younger folks now a days...
i know i might be getting a little bit more "adult" than i normally am and it's just because of the below statement...it makes me feel like this is becoming a serious problem with our youth...
i mean, it's been what, a month or two and we've seen 2, maybe 3 "omg, i was caught" posts??

well, the fact that the bars in florida don't give a crap as to whether or not they give alchohol to minors sure doesn't help... for many years there, going to the college bars, i was never carded at the bar, only at hte entrance!
back in my hayday - college - they used to close bars down that provided anything to anyone under 21...now, it seems that they only get fined which is no big deal because as long as they can sell more, they can afford to pay the fine.

I am underage so it will be perfect. The fine for the bartender personally will be $10,000 and upwards of $100,000 for the bar. That shows you that we are not kidding around. ATF closed 2 of the biggest clubs in Key West and took the bartenders to jail, as well as those drinking.

I was under the impression that it was the state ABC who dealt with that stuff rather than the ATF - that the ATF only got involved when there were things like unstamped bottles and cigarettes crossing state lines. The reason I ask about this is because during my little alcohol-legal mess, it was the Texas ABC I was dealing with, not the ATF, which I assumed was because I was breaking a state law and not a federal one.

ATF deals with major drug, alcohol and firearm issues. I worked with ATF once on an illegal weapons case, guns being transported up the coast on fishing boats.

As an Officer, you're just trying to do your job. Serve the public and protect them from harm. Sometimes you need to protect them from themselves. When I was doing LE, I was only 21, yet I was writing DUI's for people twice my age. If I could have a dollar for every person that looked at me like they wanted to kill me during my tour, I'd be richer then Bill Gates. I was doing a simple inspection once and everyone seemed real nice until they found out they were in violation for a safety infraction, next thing I know I've got someone pulling a knife out in front of me. Sure makes you think twice about your life.
Respect your Law Enforcement, they are only there to help you.

In TX, unless I'm wrong, the serving PERSON behind the bar is cited for providing the alcohol, not the establishment itself, which is why everyone in TX who serves alcohol has to get certified by the TABC. The establishment gets clobbered if their permits aren't up to date.

No the bar didn't get fined. Heck, the mayor of the town has financial interest in the bar! Do you think his own police force would fine a very popular, profitable bar? It's corrupt in my view but that's how it works. This is how a college town makes its money...drinking tickets. If they keep letting 'em in, they keep gettin' money...unfortunately I was the one that was fried. And as I said before....it was all of my fault due to poor decision making. I should have known better.

PS: It was not my intent to drink and drive. I think that is the utmost, dispicable thing you can do to fellow humanity. I'm in college so I can barely afford to drive my car as it is, let alone drive to the airport everyday! When I'm on campus I walk everywhere.

Personally, i think underage minors should do a night in jail and leave it at that unless it's not the first offense...it's a harsh punishment but if that won't teach you, nothing will... community service is more like a slap on the hand
I know if i have kids and they disregard and get in trouble, i want them to have a one time harsh punishment so they learn from it and never attempt it again....it's like hitting your head against an unprotected corner of the countertop...you'll only do that once!!
if your at a friends house, the police most likley wouldn't care unless something happens that calls the police out there (which does happen at underage parties, mind you)... but if your out in public violating the law, it's a different situation entirely....

I think you're taking this a bit too far, accidents ending up with fatalities happen everyday, and alcohol doesn't cause all of them. Believe it or not, you can have an accident going below the speed limit.
Seriously though, drink in the house, respect the 5-O, don't drink and drive, and you shouldn't have any problems.
This is as stupid an argument as it is for people to complain about getting a $200 speeding ticket. Wear the stupid seat belt and save yourself 200 bucks!!!!!!!!!
