Is it Rude to recline?

I don't make a deal of it if I am in uniform but at 6'5" my knees rub the back of the seat in front of me in the ERJ and on some 737's for that matter. The person in front of me really can't put there seat back. They always try, then my knees get pinned. It does kinda suck when they see that their seat isn't as far back as their buddies next to them though... then try and push back as hard as they can... OUCH, a shoulder tap is some times neccesary at that point.

A peeve of mine are the people who hit the button and shove back as fast and hard as they can. If you are reaching for your bag under your seat, you could get popped pretty good- or a drink spilled all over your lap. Seems like it is an emotional issue with space. I usually don't recline if someone is behind, but if I do I do so carefully and considerately.

i don't think it's rude, the seat has that function to begin with, and if you are a regular traveler, you did pay for that function. However, there are rude ways to go about it. If I am going to recline I go back slowly, and I usually ask the person if its ok (that's just me though). If there is someone sitting behind me with long legs that make it impossible for me to recline, well thats just a few short hours out of my life where I can't recline, I think I'll be ok :)

Sometimes I recline my seat, sometimes I don't... if I do, I always do so slowly as to not hurt anyone, spill anything or break someone's computer. All I ask is that the person in front of me do the same.

What bugs me 190% more than the person in front of me reclining their seat, is when the person behind me uses MY seat to pull themselves up out of their seat. Uh, yeah, you're shaking the bejudas out of my seat, there buddy. Yanking, grabbing and shaking my seat to pull their fat ass up... sheesh, push up on the armrests or use your freaking leg muscles to stand! I've even had clueless people pull my hair in the process of pulling themselves up out of their seat! Along the same lines is the person behind me slamming their tray table around. Yes, it DOES shake the seat that the tray table is attached to.

I agree 110%. I am a taller guy and there is nothing worse than some idiot who thinks they are on a space shuttle launch when they shove the seat into my knees. I think it's just some of that "rude American" thing...people in general are self-centered and don't give a crap around others. The seems to be very little courtesy left out there. And for the record, even though I am a big dude and do recline the seat, I usually only recline a little bit...and do it slowly.

I'm 6'5. It's not rude, it's reality.

And, by the way, the most uncomfortable seating I've ever had space-wise has not been on an RJ or Dash. No, it was in the back of a certain large international airline's "transcontinental" 757s. Specifically, the seats located in the vicinity of Door 2R.

A certain Phoenix based airline? Their A319s have less legroom than most RJs I've been on.

If somebody reclines slowly then I don't really have a problem with it. It's the people that slam it back that aggravate me.

I've only ever ridden transcon on Airways on a 321 (which, except for needing a tech stop westbound in winter, was not so bad), so I can't tell you about their 319s. Only time I've been on a 319, I was in first class on Virgin America being wined and pampered, so no complaining is permitted. :)

Let's see...I can't stand up in an Electrical Reset Jet. CRJ, I can, just barely. Dash 8, too. First class lav on a 737 has head clearance problems. And so on. They just don't build them for big people. We aren't average.

I do envy slightly shorter people.

Commuters or general travellers, is it rude to recline your coach seat on someone?

Not at all. The seats have the ability to recline, so recline away. Generally the only time I don't recline is during meal service. Kind of hard to eat witht he seat in front all the way back.

Heh, I had a Finnair flight attendant tell me to put my seat up at mealtime.

I agree. I'm only 6' and by far the most uncomfortable, cramped ride I've had was on 757 to Liberia, Costa Rica. Can't remember if it was Delta or Continental.

I look back and recline it slowly.

I've seen too many situations where someone has the tray out or a laptop out and someone just smash the hell out of it rapidly.

Huh???? Sorry I can't hear you over the roar of the engines.... :p

Ah, see, she looked at me with her young, cool, blue eyes, and gave the instruction in Finnish and Swedish first...I complied.

Obligatory I'm Not Sexist Really Disclaimer: Compliance with flight and cabin crew instructions is required no matter who is giving them, but she was sure convincing about it.

I just wish they would lock the seats down so that they will not recline. This "reclining option" is left over from the old days of airline travel when there was enough room available to actually recline a seat without hitting someone's knees.

This is my feeling on the matter. Put the seats in avg comfortable position and leave it.
