I've heard that unless you are a member of a club or under the supervision of an instructor, you need to acquire insurance with a big deductible to rent a glider. Is this normal?
I rented gliders (solo) in number of different places, both commercial outfits and clubs, it was never a requirement to purchase any insurance. I believe SSA membership gives access to a decent insurance coverage, but I don't know all details.
Also my plain vanilla Avemco non-owned airplane policy always included glider coverage, I never asked for it it was there by default along with ASEL.
