Hi all,

My name is Jerome Vorus and I am a freshman at a local community college. I was thinking of transferring to ERAU (Embry Riddle) next year but having doubts because of tuition. Is ERAU over rated? Are there any other schools that can do the same as ERAU for a fraction of the price? What are your suggestions.

Thanks

Is ERAU over rated?

Short answer: yes.

There are plenty of other schools that will do the same thing for A LOT cheaper.

I'm going to UVU and it starts out at $170/credit hour. It goes cheaper if you attend more classes in one semester. Plus, it's all online so it's extremely flexible.

your sig should tell you something. I however think you should get a degree in anything other than aviation. That being said go to ERAU for another type of degree. I have always thought it was a good school.

Yes. Fly through an FBO, finish at your CC and transfer somewhere to finish you degree.

If you want to go to a university flight program, it makes sense to go to an accredited one, of which there are many including Riddle http://www.aabi.aero/programs.html.

However there is nothing unique that Riddle offers that you can't get elsewhere for less money. That list should get you started as far as researching universities goes.

If you're not committed to going to a university flight program (which is perfectly fine too, the airlines don't care), then go to a good school that you can afford, major in something that interests you, and fly at a good local FBO.

There is some talk on capitol hill of allowing classroom time to be credited towards an ATP in the future, and that time may be limited to classes in aeronautics programs at accredited universities, but that's far from a sure thing.

Flight Program- overrated, and overpriced. They don't do anything better than any other flight school/program out there. Well, they do 2 things better. 1) Remove money from your pockets quicker, and 2) Make flying not fun what-so-ever. They've found ways to make flying not fun, in ways I wasn't sure is possible.

Educational Program- probably just over priced. I transferred to ERAU my 2nd year in college. Lots of interesting things (other than flying) to study at the school. Sure, you can get it other places, but if you really want to come here, you can find something to study.

Yes. The academics are good if you have some sort of scholorship, however, the flight training is just alright. I think ERAU does a great job at the whole 142 thing, but I just don't beleive that a 142 program is best for the student. You can get just as good of flight training, and in most cases better, through an FBO.

Overall, it's just not worth the money.

There are hours worth of reading on this topic here at JC, by the way.

I really want to go to a University where I can get my degree and fly at the same time killing 2 birds with 1 stone.
Yes....former student here.

My experience is flying had to be your LIFE to really enjoy it there. IF you have any interest in college life outside of aviation then its not for you. My opinion.

you'll be killing your wallet as well. Do all your ratings on the side at a local FBO for a fraction of the price. $120 for the aircraft/wet and the instruction.

Not overrated, it is a good school, but it is OVERPRICED, you can get a degree online through UVU and go part 61 school for ratings and pay about half....JMO

Thanks everyone for the advice. I really needed it. This problem has been on my mind for a while. I am so glad that I have found a new family at JetCareers!

By the way, I CFI'd there in 2007-8. It was not the right fit for me, nor I for it...

If you're still interested in the place, PM me and I'll give you my least biased synopsis.

Good luck in your decision/search.
