I think there are GA forums on there, might be a good place to start networking! If you are touring around you should at least be close to some airport/flight school/ flight club. FAA license of private or greater gives you day VFR privileges I think, obviously all will require an instructor checkout. Don't count on the weather cooperating!

If you are buying tickets, seriously consider non-US airlines. It makes a big difference on a long journey.
