Some Iraq pics from the road...

I also have a great video of what a dust landing looks like from the cockpit, but can't figure out how to get it on here.

Wow. Those are pretty amazing. I hope they put pitot covers on the one in the second picture. A guy I was flying with last month just got back from flying those over there and he said called them two palm trees humping a dumpster.

LOL.

Nice pictures Chinook driver.

Yeah, what's the story with the one that got sand blasted? Is that typical or was it left in one place in the desert too long?

Awesome photos!

The one that is sand-blasted happened just a few days after the war started. We had been across the border for no more than a week when we stopped to refuel at a Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP).

Without warning, a massive sand storm struck. It lasted five days, stranding us in the middle of nowhere. During the sandstorm, it rained, and when it rains in Iraq, it actually rains mud. And that's what you see coating my beloved Chinook.

As to the pitot tube: I will never again be worried about the pitot static system on any aircraft. Once we took off (we had no pitot covers), all of the pitot static instruments worked perfectly. That's after five days of being sprayed with mud-rain.

Very cool photos!:)

I appreciate what you're doing over there for everyone. Someone has to do it, thanks for being one of them.:)

Hey, where did you get the pic for the Avatar? My friend was out with the platoon or whatever that took those pics. Maybe you know him. His job is/was basically like a weather briefer, but he went out on a few missions/sorties/etc. PM me or something and I'll send you his name. I have the other shots from the pickup. pretty awesome.

what's up with the photo you can't get on here?

you can only put 5 thumbnails in a post....so if you want to add some more, just add them to another post.

if it's too large, send it to me at kristie@jetcareers.com and i'll resize it for you.

I just wanted to clarify to everyone that I am not currently in Iraq. I redelpoyed over a year ago. These are pics from when I was in Iraq. Thanks for everyone's support though... I appreciate it and I know that my fellow soldiers currently deployed appreciate it.

That avatar pic was circulated within the Chinook community by whoever took it. The unit isn't mine, but if the ground unit you're talking about is the 101st I might know him. (Over 20,000 in a Division!)

Cool pics, and thanks for your service!

P.S.- What are the pipe looking things running fwd-aft along the top of the fuselage?

Thanks... and that's an antenna for the High Freq Radio.

Least you're not in the -58Ds. Those guys were having it rough during my time there, almost one going down every week or two or getting battle damaged. Launched two separate times as RESCAP cover for two separate incidents of -58s being downed.

I was there for the very first rotation... they didn't even bring the 58s over because of the altitudes. I had heard they were there now and can hardly believe it. I guess they can operate around the Kandahar area... but Bagram and up aorund the Hindu Kush? There's no way they can operate up there, right?

Sorry for the confusion.....I did one rotation to Afghan and two to Iraq. The 58Ds I worked around were all around Iraq. One downed one was near Mosul that I responded to, the other north of Al-Taquaddum.

Remember Gatling Delta area? The area east of Bagram to the Paki border encompassing Jalabad, etc? That's the high terrain area I was talking about....they used to tell us that if we ejected over that area and landed on top of one of those peaks (bout 18,000' for the laypeople), that we'd have to hike down to the rescue chopper, lol.

The Unit in the Picture is G company/104th AV from the Pennsylvania and Connecticut Army National Guard ... I know the pilots flying the aircraft. I'm a proud member of the PA Army National Guard.
