Iran unveils new stealth fighter

Of course the Iranian Air Force fleet and tactics are a complete joke, because half of their aircraft are from the United States and we trained them

Is anyone saying that in this thread? I've argued the exact opposite of that in numerous threads on here...ya know, as someone who theoretically actually would have had to fly against 'em if that ever happened.

Example, one of many times I've said this here and elsewhere:

Yeah...like the entire thread but you.
All I see in this thread are folks being critical of the Q-313, and not bashing the entire IrAF's overall combat capabilities.
Yeah that. According to Wikipedia, they've got some MiG-29's, Mirage F-1's, and Su-24's in addition to the stuff we sold them in the 70's. The MiG in particular is a pretty capable machine.

I just think this particular aircraft is more about making Iranians (who may be disgruntled under the burden of seemingly never ending economic sanctions) feel proud to be Iranians standing against the 'evil empire.' You know, make them feel like the scrappy and struggling underdog who is still in the fight to win it, directing all of that anger outside rather than directing that anger inward towards the regime itself.

I don't see it like you do.

Haven't you seen this thread a thousand times over?

"Plane diverts because of disruptive passenger" is responded to with, "I CAN'T BELIEVE THOSE STUPID PASSENGERS!"

"Aircraft goes around at airport" is responded to with, "I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT STUPID MEDIA!"

"Iranian's develop new aircraft" is responded to with, "THOSE STUPID IRANIANS! THEY CAN'T EVEN BUILD A REAL AIRPLANE!!"

It's the lynch mob of the internet at work, fueling the infinite content generator (social media).

This kind of brings up a question Ive always wanted to ask the military pilots here. Which country, in your opinion, would give the US the biggest air to air threat? Ive hear the Israelis have mad skills and the Russians do not.

I have flown with the Israelis, and I would not say that they have 'mad skills'. I think they are good for a small-sized Air Force that has very good equipment.

Their PR department, however, is phenomenal, and are successful at their job of making their neighbors believe they are 12 feet tall.

Exact things all the Hornet guys I know say. I've even heard that their best guys are usually equal to our average guys. They have an outstanding history but I would say part of that probably was who they were fighting.

Of course the IAF has had some phenomenal and lopsided victories in their past, and have a fighting spirit that is unmatched. The guys I have flown with were knowledgeable and skilled, like bunk22 says, very similar to US pilots. I like and respect them, and would be happy to fly with them again.

I definitely don't have anything bad to say about them, but they're not the unmatched badarses that a lot of folks seem to think they are (again, a perception that they have gone to great lengths to cultivate/perpetuate -- and for good reason).

As we've discussed before on JC, many middle-east and arab militaries tend to closely associate outside perceptions about capability with actual capability. In other words, they want highly capable equipment on the ramp and a belief from their enemies that they can use it well...but aren't so interested in going through the lengths required to actually be very good with that equipment. In practice, these arab air forces operate more like a playboy flying club than a fighting force.

This ends up meaning that opponents of the Israeli AF aren't exactly superb forces in their own right; the result is that a competent air force like the IAF can absolutely mop the floor with those opponents. It is not hard to look capable when many of your opponents are retards.

Going back to the picture of the "pilot" in the "fighter", I measured with my calibrated thumb and index finger, and using my mark one eyeball, it looks to me like you could not close the canopy with the pilot in the aircraft. It really looks like the pilot would have enormous headroom if he was holding a futaba transmitter though.
