I just finished my first trip on IOE in the CRJ-700. Overall I think it was a great learning experience and I had a tremendous captain who was a great teacher. It was very overwhelming but day after day I improved and slowly got better at some things. However, arrivals, approaches, and some other stuff just didn't go very well coupled with making a lot of stupid little mistakes over and over.

I tend to get down on myself and I'm trying not to so I'd like to know how other peoples first IOE trip usually goes. Is this a normal struggle?

Yes.

Your first day is going to be spent wondering what in the world just happened. Listen to what your line check airman has to say, trust their teaching and move on to tomorrow. You won't make fewer mistakes, but you'll make NEW mistakes, which is the most important thing you can do.

Relax and try to enjoy the experience, you'll perform better if you do.
 
The firehose isn't over yet. Try to relax. Transitioning from the arrival to the terminal environment can be a tough thing to do.
 
Don't beat yourself up! I can assure you that it slows down over time. I can remember my heart rate felling like it was 180 BPM every time I flew an a approach the first 6 months. You got this.
 
You're bringing back memories. As others have said don't be hard on yourself. Just learn from the mistakes and move on. Pilots are type A people so it may be hard for you to do. For the first few months I prayed that every time I landed wind was calm. I could do x wind landings i was just scared of scraping the wing especially since I started on the 200. Now I'm excited for them especially since I'm on he 900. Your confidence in yourself will get better too as you fly more and get used to the airplane. You'll also learn so much from the captains you fly with.
 
I just finished my second trip on IOE in the 700/900. I'm right there with you buddy. First day was an eye opener. Hand flying the river visual 19 into DCA for the first time and I greased it on. That was a good feeling! Then my last landing into CLT was my simulated carrier landing. Boom "Welcome to Charlotte ladies and gentlemen!" Just keep learning!

Remember that carrier landing. You will need it at some fields. BUR in a bad rain storm is a good example.

My first day on IOE… 1 leg, Captain flew it. We'd already landed and I was feeling like, "so when do we depart and get going?" EVERYthing went by that fast; it was insane. By the end of the trip, I was at least keeping up w/ the plane.. as someone said, it takes a few hundred hours before you feel somewhat competent.. and then a few hundred hours later you're like, "no, i didn't know a damn thing then!" ..
glad your IOE captain is good and you'll learn plenty and remember to have fun :)
 
Totally normal to feel that way. I thought the same thing after my first IOE trip. Heck even now, I'm sweating getting back in after having a few weeks with no flying on reserve.

I've been doing airline flying since 2007 and after a few weeks off it takes me a leg before I'm spooled up again enough to be a fully functioning, contributing member of the crew.

I rather like how those airplanes will quit flying when asked to do so.
