"They're leaning towards getting us to use the speedbrakes whenever there's a doubt about making a restriction"

The green arc is a great help. In VNAV, the green should be at or before the fix with the restriction. If the green arc is one the wrong side of the fix, you have a problem. The weird thing about VNAV is it wants to stay on path so if you use speedbrakes to try and increase your descent rate, all it does is slow you down. If the green arc is telling you you'll be high and fast at the restriction, go to FLCH, bug the speed up a bit if you can (that gives you a higher descent rate), and use speedbrakes. You'll see the green arc move back and can actually control the green arc with the speedbrakes.

I'm a big believer in trying to deploy flaps at the lower end of their speed range rather than when you first hit it. That might be different than what you're used to in the MD's. Speedbrakes get me where I need to be for flaps. Also, even now, I tend to slow down early and be conservative, even being on the plane for 3 years. I see guys that can keep the speed up and get everything to work out great, being right on speed, right at the last minute. I'm just not that good yet.

Yeah, I absolutely agree on that. You could darned near give me a -90 at 250 knots and 15 miles out and I'll give you a fully-configured jet on speed at 1000 AGL.

This thing, shoot, I'm flying around like grandpa! :)

124 knot approach speed into JFK tonight. Geez, this is a different world. I'm use to speeds in the upper 140's!

I'm in the BMW M5 with the Dinan package! ;)

Holy mother of PEARL that thing is nose heavy.

Today in SFO, it was v1...Vr.... UNGH! EEEEEERG! V2 trim trim trim trim....

But later:

Mmmm.... Transcon crew meal... Steak with carmelized onions! :)

I never knew it was possible to cut steak with a plastic knife, in the flight levels, in a cockpit. That's a real skill.

Doug, love the new pics. Dayum look how high up you are now. :) You have arrived sir. :nana2:

The crash axe helps a little if it's a tad gristly!

For a short period of time we were getting speggeteos (sp?) as part of our crew meals. Of course, not only was there no way to heat them up, but you couldn't even open them. One somewhat industrious FO managed to hack the top off with the crash ax. But of course, with no spoon or fork he was limited to slurping them down cold.

I think I'll take my chances with steak and a plastic knife.
