IOE Scheduled!

So Doug, when you read this you will have flown both types. The 757 & 767.

So I gotta know...which do you prefer???

I'm waiting for a detailed reply with baited breath, seriously!!!

You know, with only one flight in each, I really haven't formed a preference yet.

The 757 is nose heavy and drives like a sports car. Tight, snappy and you really feel like you're behind the wheel of a fine sports car on the autobahn. Wanna climb? BAM, it's there. It's a little weird for me because the captain's been teaching me to retard the throttles to idle around 20-30 feel on the RA (757 ONLY) and for the last 8 years, that's been a precursor to a bloody mess on the -88/90.

The 767 feels like a big airplane. Has an electric groan when you're accelerating and is really plush. There's a fantastic and smooth roll rate because of the inboard ailerons, you DO NOT chop the power 20-30' AGL else you're going to end up in a bloody heap. The 767 also has a really cool table that slides over your flight kit so you can put your Jepps on them.

757: Makes you want to say, "Hot S---! Was that F------ great or what?"
767: Makes you want to say, "That was smooth... We're talking Don Cornelius 'Soul Train' Smoooooth"

The captain has a real preference for the 757, but the 767 is so large that it feels like you've 'arrived', you know?

But in both: "Speedbrakes are your friend". We got the FMS Bridge visual or something like that this evening and I think I needed speedbrakes up until the time we had flaps 15 to stay on profile... Then of course they sidestepped us from 28R to 28L, don't they know there's a n00bie in the right seat?! :) Really didn't even have time to throw in the ILS.

That's two "just eyeball it!" visuals in two days. I'm sure we'll do some whacky approach into JFK tomorrow night too.

I'll try and write something in the blog tomorrow but I'm completely whipped. Yeah, I didn't do a whole hell of a lot of physical work on a 6 hour transcon, but being on a 6 hour learning curve can be tiring.

This is going to be a complete mess when I get long range NAV thrown in.

Thanks, I REALLY, REALLY appreciate you taking the time to do this write up for me!

:)

BTW, JFK is a mess. Holy cow.

Ha, ha, ha....

Welcome to my (now yours as well) world!

The nice parts:

-Most everyone is happy to be there... "We're going to Europe!!!"

-Doesn't matter if you're 30, 60, 90 minutes late... "We're going to Europe!!!"

-One leg and you're done... "We're (the crew) going to Europe, and we get a 24 hour (or more) layover:rawk: "

The operation was so crazy, the jetway at 19 broke, then we had to board an IAD-style "people mover" and board thru the aft galley.

JFK's not half as bad as ATL concourse-C/D but I've been in SimWorld all month so it's taking a little catching up to do.

I was going to talk to you about your Great Circle navigation skills...

Take a wee little deviation to avoid "overhangs" and an amended clearance everyone's a regular Magellan! :) :sarcasm:

The first one was a little funny. I'm scarfing down a first class meal and look up and think, "Aww, maybe we oughta take about 15 right for a bit"

Flightaware is Flight-a-wrong, as Southernjets only flies 757-200's, 767-300's and 767-300ER's! :)

BTW, JFK is a mess. Holy cow.

My second day as a new captain right off OE was out of JFK...with a brand new FO and a new opp with Jetblue to boot. I'll add that I had NEVER been through JFK. The trip went well and the FO did a bang up job. I'll never forget it though. The night before I logged on the company website and looked at open time available to reserves...there it was the JFK day trip. I said damn I KNOW I'll get that trip...sure enough the phone rang 30 seconds later I kid you not!

My best landings the 757/767 are when you can keep the flare/touchdown as "flat" as possible. Minimal nose up attitude on touchdown while still having minimal descent rate. Don't let the nose slam down on the 757 cause it will want to after touchdown. I pull thrust, normally, when I hear "20" on the 757 and "10" on the 767.

I think on one of my first landings on IOE the Capt had us do an autoland and he said "watch how the autopilot does it and do it like that"....haha. It does great autolands.

UPS doesn't recommend speedbrake useage with more than flaps 5. It was a new policy that came out to encourage a more stable approach and better advance planning. You can use them to 20 if you have to but they would rather not see it. Personally, I have no problem with using them if you need to beyond 5. Sometimes that's just what it takes.

They're leaning towards getting us to use the speedbrakes whenever there's a doubt about making a restriction. I guess there are so many former mad dog guys in the program that we're getting a lot of flap overspeeds.

In the mad dog, flaps are used for drag AND high-lift. Like if you're below 280 and you need to get down, 'slats extend' is usually a standard call in the approach phase.

However, they want us to speedbrake down to the maneuvering speed and 'lag' with flap application.

Anyway, this plane is freaking sweet. I do so little, I always have the paranoia that I'm missing something.
