IOE and liability

So I was voluntold to do IOE with one of our new captains. I really didn't mind the idea at first but after a couple days in I began thinking about the liability of it. The way it works for us is on paper he is PIC but I get this feeling that if a violation occured or he planted it some where against my advice I will still be held liable some extent. Anyone have information on court cases or other information along this line?

My suggestion here is if you are an IOE check airman, don't ever let that happen. Everywhere I've worked, the IOE check airman is technically the PIC and signs the book...

Every enforcement action I've been witness to always holds both pilots responsible. That being said, are you officially a check airman? What training does your operation provide for that title?

I never signed anything so I doubt I am "officially a check airman". My training for the position consisted of 1 roughly 40 minute flight from the right seat lol. I have no problem flying from the right seat or fixing problems from that seat. I really just do not want the liability of the position.

I would think your liability in that position is no different than flying as a captain and letting the first officer fly every other leg. If he screws up and you dont fix it, you still get busted, same with IOE.

Welcome to flight instruction! It really does not matter at what level instruction is accomplished, you are liable.:whatever:

Not to mention, in a 2 crew airplane, no matter what, you are both liable from a legal standpoint

I guess you are right. Maybe my pay will be bumped up to match that of captains in two pilot aircraft ;-)
