Interview question...

Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have said that... Kind of bad taste, but I think maturity of a pilot is important too when they are hiring people totally new to the industry.

18-20 year old males have high car insurance rates for a reason, and there are alot of folks fitting that criteria getting into jet cockpits at airlines these days. They need to ask more than just the "would you go below mins if the Captain said to" question.

What is the answer to this question? he is the Captain, should you kick his ass and assume command? Protest the decision is about all you can do isn't it? I may be missing something though.

As for the other question, seems like you should go to the ILS Airport since its above mins. You can usually get through a squall line, even easier at high altitude. I am no where near ready for interviews but I like to see what gets asked.

I like the kick his ass and assume command answer myself. If your CFI told you to pull the mixture/s and flare while abeam the #ers would you do that?

Never go below mins unless you are on fire or some sort of circumstance like that.

That is assuming you are in control of the aircraft. I would argue I am sure, but to what point do you press the issue? He is captain, at what point does the Chain of Command over ride your protest?

My CFI would never tell me that.....he would simply pull the mixture himself and tell me to land....:) :) :)

there was a korean air incident about this. f/o said go arounda few times, ca touched town, f/o pulled off, ca fought him, they ran off the runway.

of course im sure this happened alot quicker with all that dang ching-chang talk i cant understand yewww

Well, I officially don't have the worst comment in the thread anymore.

I don't think you can rent a car until you're 24.

That came out of left field; thanks for the info :).

FWIW, I rented cars when I was 23, I paid a premium for them, however. On the order of $65-$95/day for an economy.

I went on a bus ride to Mexico when I was 18, when I was in Phoenix I searched around for someone who would rent me a car, and I did find one.

I guess those companies that hire pilots who usually can't even rent a car are pretty similar to those companies who rent to 18 year olds in the middle of the night.

You are flying along to an airport, the weather goes down at the airport, so you have two airports to choose from. One airport has an ILS and the weather is close to minimums, but there is a line of thunderstorms between you and the airport. The second airport only has a non-precision and is below minimums. Which do you go to and why?

I don't want to sound mean, but who ever is asking an interview question like this is a little overzealous.

Your original airport went below landing minimums for the available approaches, but your alternate is mysteriously blocked by a line of thunderstorms and your other alternate just went below minimums.

I'd probably ask, "Sir? Is dispatch that piss poor here?"

Well, you're not going to your destination, you're not going to shoot an approach dispatches poor choice of an alternate with a non-precision approach below minimums and there's a line of thunderstorms around your other alternate. Well, are they scattered? What level of thunderstorm is it? Where am I? Are there any on-line diversionary airports or are we just in a theoretical vacuum where the Soviets nuked every other airport?

I vote "doofus question" and HR needs to re-evaluate what they're asking candidates.
