International travel questions

Well I am planning a trip to the Brittish Isles (Dublin and London) in MArch surring spring break from school and a week of vacation from work. Having not done Europe on my own before I have a couple of questions:

1) Where can I find a website with a list of departure taxes from europe?

I know London is quite expensive and was planning to hop over to Dublin for a couple of days to save money. A ticket on RyanAir is less that $30 (revenue).

2) I was planning to do the Hostel thing, and found a couple online that look decent, but was wondweing if you had any sugesstions.

3) Since I am leaving during the begining of break (Heavy loads out of BGR) it looks like I will have to stay the first night in Atlanta and was wondering what the cheap (but clean with transportation) place with an employee discount is.

4) Since I have benifits with CO and DL what would be an appropriate amount of time buffer to get bumped from the CO flight and make the DL flight. I realise this question is more airport specific. I would have 2hrs 40min in this situation.

5) International to domestic conection in Atlanta. What is a safe bet to make a conection while clearing customs. 1hr 35min ?

I guess that is it for now, the obligatory pictures will be posted upon my return.

All taxes are included in your plane fare, you don't have to worry about paying any departure taxes at European airports.
I remember paying a departure tax in Thailand (at a special counter, after paying the tax they gave you a receipt that you had to show right before/after?, can't remember well, security. But never had to do that at an European airport.

Yeah I don't recall paying any taxes out of Chuck DeGall-ee.

Well....... I you really want to have a good time I'll sugest a nice little hostel in a small town in Slovakia, cheap rooms, spa, and a lot of girls. ( A lot of them look like models, and you may have to share the same room with them). There is also an old brick factory in town ( a MUST visit) with a really interesting architecture where they held "art" expositions all the time. (just PM me if you want more info) :D :D :D :D :D.

As a non-rev your departure taxes are not included, since you did not pay a fare to begin with. I was just wondering what to expect to have to pay.

Sorry, I didn't get that you were non-rev.

I'll look up what I paid tax-wise to go to LGW and back...

(pause)

03 0059 08/26/02 LGW/ATL Intl Fee 7.59 08/28/02
03 0059 08/26/02 LGW/ATL Intl Fee 5.00 08/28/02
03 0059 08/26/02 LGW/ATL Intl Fee 31.28 08/28/02
03 0059 08/26/02 LGW/ATL Intl Fee 6.00 08/28/02
03 0059 08/26/02 LGW/ATL Intl Fee 3.10 08/28/02

Now that was for two of us but that was also 2002.

And here's DUB...

03 0129 03/18/05 DUB/ATL Intl Fee 13.58 03/21/05
03 0129 03/18/05 DUB/ATL Intl Fee 5.00 03/21/05
03 0129 03/18/05 DUB/ATL Intl Fee 4.95 03/21/05
03 0129 03/18/05 DUB/ATL Intl Fee 7.00 03/21/05

That was for two people as well.

See above

2) I was planning to do the Hostel thing, and found a couple online that look decent, but was wondweing if you had any sugesstions.

Accor hotels offers a very good worldwide discount in the Ibis, Novotel, Sofitel, Mercure Eurohotels. You'll have to call directly to get your specific airline's company id & contract number. But it's upwards of 50% or more.

3) Since I am leaving during the begining of break (Heavy loads out of BGR) it looks like I will have to stay the first night in Atlanta and was wondering what the cheap (but clean with transportation) place with an employee discount is.

$39 for the ATL Sleep Inn. But you'd better call quick because they go fast.

4) Since I have benifits with CO and DL what would be an appropriate amount of time buffer to get bumped from the CO flight and make the DL flight. I realise this question is more airport specific. I would have 2hrs 40min in this situation.

That's about right.

5) International to domestic conection in Atlanta. What is a safe bet to make a conection while clearing customs. 1hr 35min ?

I'd say at least 1hr 45m. Immigration/re-screening can take anywhere from a quick 20 minutes to an hour depending on the time. And if you checked a bag, you have to add-in time to recheck it.

Travel within Europe, there are many options, in no special order:

EasyJet
Ryan Air
My Travel

Are just a few to come to mind.

Since nobody seems to get the "joke", I'll tell you.
What I wrote above is a sort of synopsis of the recent feature film "The Hostel".
If anyone has watched the movie then he/she will get it.
In the movie, two American backpackers travel to Slovakia, with the promise of a hostel where girls abound, and free love is the norm, only to find that something really sinister is going on at the hostel.

Europe is awesome man, have a good time. But, just be ware of the hostils and such.....see "EUROTRIP"

geez, can't believe everything you see in a movie guys!! just like this last time we went to france - we didn't meet a single "not so nice french person"...not one! again!! and that was our 3rd or 4th time over there? something like that.... :)

should really talk to theshortone and john herreshoff about the hostel situations!! they were the most recent tourists that i know of that used hostels all around europe.

have a good time!!

Kristie, of course I don't believe that if you go to Slovakia you're gonna end up in a torture chamber ("The hostel") or that your pocket change is going to get you rooms at the Ritz, champagne, caviar, etc. ("Euro trip") It was a joke that I was hoping somebody would get and laugh out of it.:) :) :)
I wonder what do Slovakians think of the fact that their country has been portrayed so poorly in those two movies. I guess that the producers should've made some fictitious country names.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

I knew that.. i was replying more to Alphaone's post... cuz i got your joke! altho that's bound to scare people away from going overseas! haha

Actually, their ambassador was pretty pissed off about it, but he was very proud of the fact that he's reminded when he goes home that part of the movie is true. He said something like when he goes home, he's reminded that this country may not be rich, but it's been blessed with a natural resource that many rich countries would love -- gorgeous women.

The producer of the movie said that he was sorry that he portrayed Slovaks as bunch of torturing sickos, but hey, at least he promoted their beautiful women and now they're on the map of American thought.

But I'll bet you the average American couldn't find Slovakia on a map if you gave him both hands and a flashlight.

Well, I have done a pretty good share of travelling in Europe and I know I can't believe what I see in the movies but none the less, I have not yet had to stay in a hostel and I want to keep it that way:) BTW, back to the old topic of non-reving, is it worth attempting to non-rev CVG-FRA and back during June? A German buddy wants me to come for the world cup so we figured why not so the traveling crew is headed over, but of course we're all poor college students and it is all up to us to get over and all.....Should I just buy ticket?
Thanks, A1
