FLIPY FLAPS!
So, I got called and offered a job today, perks: new location, plenty of time in the winter for school, get to fly IFR, could work my way into the twin, and potentially into the float-plane, base pay plus hourly (which is better than just hourly like now), downsides: slightly less overall yearly gross.

hmmm...decisions.

man thats tough

how big a pay cut are we talking?

I dunno, its a hell of a risk (as always) and last time I tried to leave Anchorage I got burned pretty bad.
The guy who runs this company sounds like pretty good person to work for.

Living in a small town the residents usually know how the local air carriers treat their pilots, and I have yet to hear a bad thing about this company.

That doesn't sound too bad, I think I'm gonna try to jump out to JNU and meet them in person again.

Brother.... I know exactly what you are facing.... I have had three job offers in the last month that I realllllllly want to take.... but at present I am unwilling to break a commitment I made to my present employer until I have finished out my contract.... if I left I would more than double my current salary but I just don't have it in me to break my word.
I know my situation is a bit different from yours but it trolls the same line of thought... go with your gut.

belloitt - break your word and take the money. employers do it to employees in a heartbeat (and no, I'm not saying this because I just got canned)

In this day and age I can see how and why this would be a good idea... and I am not trying to be a goody goody here.... but a person is only as good as their word (or at least I think so) and I keep my word until I fulfill my end of the bargain... after I do anything is game.... and unless the industry is really in the crapper and I haven't been furloughed I plan on reevaluating my position and doing what is best for me and my interests...

I appreciate you thoughts moxie and I don't think less of anyone who would cut bait and go fishing elsewhere but I dance to a slightly different tune....

and that my friend would be the tune of a toothless hillbilly singing Madonna's "Shooting Star" while beating away on the ol' washboard with some spoons!

Amen to that. I am the same way. Both of my "post CFI" jobs have been basically verbal contracts. My first company gave me my type rating. Turns out I still ended up getting laid off because the owners we managed for sold 2 of the Citations I flew... but either way, I would have stayed with them as long we originally agreed had everything worked out as planned (5 years).

I think this is rare in aviation. Most pilots seem to have a "grass is always greener..." mentality.

Ive been fortunate to have found good jobs so far, maybe thats why I feel the way, i do. I dunno...

Sounds to me like the benefits outweigh the loss of pay. If you are really interested in the job, take it. Does the slightly less overall yearly gross include the base pay and the hourly pay, or just the base pay? Either way $2-$5k/yr gross isn't that much, I doubt you'll even miss it.

Is there any OT available so you can make up the difference in gross pay? Will the pay go up after the first year so that you will make $2-$5k/yr more again? Have you talked with any of the current pilots to see what it's like there? Why is there an opening? What is the turnover like? Any guarantees for the twin or float-plane, or just is it just bait? Will working for this company help you get closer to your dream job, further from it, or no difference than your current job? How long do you plan to stay with them? How long do they want/expect you to stick around?
