Interesting, pilot salary study for 2012....

I beleive some VFR ops fly with 1000/3 at night (A021). Terrain and NVGs are big factors. The problem with all that VFR flying is a lack of inadvertent IMC proficiency. Many places check the box annually -- that's it. You can get up the creek pretty fast at night and with NVGs. Also, IFR in anything smaller than an S76 can be challenging (fuel-wise) if you need an alternate, and sometimes they still have to go to the airport.

As for getting the add-on, then you need at least 1500 hrs IN HELICOPTERS to get a job.
