Insurance Question?

What is the requirement for the private pilot as far as insurance is concerned. If I go rent a plane from a local FBO what kind of insurance do I need to carry? Or is it like renting a car all you need is the licence and the insurance is included in the cost of the rental?

From what I understand, you have to read each insurance statement carefully as some will not cover you yourself. I've heard of pilots carrying their own liability insurance. I've also heard of FBO aircraft insurance companies going after the pilot after an accident, because of negligence. Is this what you've heard?

It normally has been included in the rentals that I've flown, but it doesn't cover everything. If something happens and it's your fault, you might not be covered by the policy.

With some exceptions, the insurance that's "included" with the rental is insurance to protect the FBO. It doesn't do a thing to protect =you=.

If you are going to rent on a regular basis at one location, find out for sure (the person at the counter doesn't have a clue, no matter what they say). If in doubt, get "Non-owned Aircraft" (aka "Renter's") insurance to take care of yourself if you are concerned about your liability. It's available from a number of places including Avemco and AOPAIA (AOPA's agency).

What he said....

The FBO's insurance is a contract between the insurer and the FBO (or whoever owns the plane) to compensate them for damage or loss of their airplane. If you, the renter/pilot are the cause of said loss the insurer will most definitely pursue you for payment.

If a passenger or person on the ground suffers injury or damage, the FBO or owner's policy is not going to cover ANYONE other than the owner, FBO, or certain named/clearly identified employees.

Flying w/o at least liability insurance is incredibly ill-advised.
