Instrument Rating Advice Needed

I am starting my instrument rating part 61 and need some advise. My scenario is should I start to train for the IR right after the private or start to fly half of my X country flight time and then start,and use the remaining half of the cross country to practice IFR after my lesson during the IR training? Please give me your imput on this case. Or mabye, you can provide me with an effective way to get the instrument rating after the private.
 
I always recommended to students that they should do a few hours of BAI with an instructor, then get a friend to fly with them under the hood (obviously a pilot). Do cross countries with them and you can both log the time. If you have a friend working on the commercial rating they always need XC time too!
