Instrument DP question

I'm talking about the SALAD 1 Departure from KOAK. It says "Climbing right turn to 097"

If you depart runway 27R on the DP, when do you begin your turn to 097? SALAD1

A co-worker climbed straight ahead to 500' before turning and got a letter from the Oakland port authority for violating noise abaitment procedures. Tower didn't say anything to them about it.

Man, I dunno. If I personally did that departure for the first time, I'd probably do the ol' 400'-turn deal and get a letter from the port authority myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yeah, 8 times out of 10, I'm climbing to 400' AGL before I turn. There are some exceptions to that, but not many. If I were your co-worker, I'd write a letter explaining that to the port authority. I'd send it registered so that I'd have proof that they got it, and I'd ask for a response.

Off the top of my head, was he on an IFR flight plan? There might be a noise abatement procedure for VFR departures and a different procedure for IFR depatures.

Luckily, I really don't think noise abatement procedures are federally regulated so the FAA probably doesn't give a crap.

Yeah most noise abatement stuff is supposed to be voluntary ...

Despite the overzealous neighbors of KSNA... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

lol ... I was telling (ok more like ranting, as I'm prone to do on occasion) this girl I met about noise abatement stuff/problems and she goes "well it's their damn fault for moving in next to an airport!"

I almost asked her to marry me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hmmm, was it because he turned too low or because he didn't power back at 1000'? According to their web site (since I don't HAVE a CA AF/D), it says to use NBAA noise abatement procedures. Either way, I was also under the impression that noise abatement was voluntary.

That's funny!!!

He is gonna write a letter to the port authority. Their complain was that he overflew a (rich) community that is supposed to be avoided. As best I could tell by looking at the DP and the printout of his groundtrack, he flew the DP quite well. Some DP's say to make an "Immediate turn" not the case with this one. The letter he recieved said departures should make an immediate turn, but how is a pilot supposed to avoid the rich part of town when they are IFR

What type of aircraft was he flying? I wouldn't make the turn until acceleration altitude (400-500 feet) either.

Was it due to the turn to 097? Or was it because he didn't make the crossing restrictions at 4000 and 5000 feet?

There are alot of rich areas in Oakland!! Just like LA....there are good parts and there are bad parts!!

He was flying a Piper Arrow (180hp). The complaint was about overflying a housing development NW of the airport during the right turn to 097. There was no problem with the crossing restriction. It was about 11pm, and the usual IMC the bay area has at night this time of year.

Well then he should fight it. If he followed ALL procedures layed out in the DP (I'm not familiar with the airport, maybe there is something else on the airport page about an obstacle or NA DP?) then he really didn't violate anything. Unless he violated the db meter thingys they have, but in an Arrow you really need full power or don't go!

I just love KSDL noise abatement procedures. Stop and goes are forbidden even with the option. And if you take off from runway 21, and wish to turn south, southeast, or east, well turn North first and do a right 270!

The only time I flew into Scottsdale was on the GPS-B...came in at 400-500' with props full, then made the right turn for the missed. "Extremely noise sensitive areas all quadrants"? Aww, too bad. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe you should go in MikeD's place to this:[ QUOTE ]
Next SDL airport noise meeting (noise study progress workshop) is this Thursday, August 5th from 1830-2030 at the SDL Airport terminal building. I, unfortunately, won't be able to make it. Can anyone else?

I'm sure you'd be a big asset for the pilot's side of the issue.

Heh, don't get the wrong impression. Noise abatement is important, but Scottsdale takes it to the next level. I'd go in there wanting to tell them all to have a big glass of shut-the-hell-up, and move away from the airport. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm not the most politically correct person in the bunch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hey those noise abatement procedures keep Alameda quiet! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif It's funny how they don't want you to fly over Alameda, Bay Farm or San Leandro but Oakland is just fine. Hehe. http://www.flyoakland.com/noise/images/NABweb.gif

Cant fly over the good neighborhoods. Guess they figure the people in Oakland wouldn't be able to hear the airplanes over the sirens and gunshots anyways.
