Instrument before College?

Right now I am a junior in HS and trying to figure out whether or not it is worth the trouble to get my instrument rating before college. The reason I say this is because I plan on getting an aviation degree mainly because I don't have another interest I could see myself learing about every day. The main colleges I am looking at are UIUC and SIU so I can save some $$ on in-state tuition. Any alumni or current students have any information on procedure with regard to placement into the aviation program with a PPL w/Instrument Rating?

I think it depends on the program you are planning to attend. Some schools recognize it and will give you credit, while others will make you take an abbreviated course. It's probably best that you contact the school by e-mail or even telephone. Good Luck.

Definately wouldn't recommend getting the instrument before a collegiate flight program. Most are pt 141 and will likely make you redo parts (or all) of the syllabus.

:sitaware: !
The poster wasn't asking whether or not he should do a collegiate aviation flight program, he was asking whether or not he should get his instrument first.

no, if your going trough a flight program, you'll pay more. I have called ASU and asked, it screws up credits. Well you work for them. Sorry about that.

If I had a dollar for everytime you cited "Chris Ford" in your posts over the last couple weeks I'd probably be able to pay for a month of car insurance.

Alright I'll get off the soap box (sorry Chris, it was fun whilt it lasted).

Pilotsjs89,
My recommendation, If you are going through a flight program at a college, don't get your instrument before. If your going to a college with out a flight program, get your ratings at your own comfortable pace and possibly instruct in college.
