Instructing at Skymates after training there.....

I noticed on the Skymates website that you have the opportunity to instruct there after you complete the Professional Flight Course there.

How exactly does this work? Is it the same setup as Ari Ben's where after your training is completed you have to opportunity to instruct a few students to see hwo you do or is it something else? IMO, instructing is somewhat imperative as far as experience goes (not to mention it sounds like a lot of fun). The opportunity to instruct where you train would certainly be beneficial as well as less problematic then moving across the country (again) as I would first have to move to Texas from California to begin training.

I really like the website and I have heard good things about Skymates. I am currently doing research so any and all inofrmation would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

I didn't do the pro pilot program, but I got most of my ratings at Skymates, and I'll be starting as an instructor there in a couple of weeks. From what I can tell, if there's room for an instructor on the staff, you'd get first dibs on the spot. I'm pretty stoked that I'll be instructing somewhere that I already know the airspace, aircraft and get along with the management and all the other instructors.

Thanks for the response, Kellwolf.

I am looking at starting my flight training (actually continuing...but more like starting) around the summer of next year. It is a little early now, but I always felt you could never do too much research.

Btw, cute baby. A little pilot in training perhaps?

Hey MCP,

First off I would like to say that SkyMates is a great flight school. I've been here since June 22, 05 ..and half way to my PPL. I did a lot of research from College Type, to Flight Academies, and other FBOs. I chose to take lessons at SkyMates because it was cost effective and you can accumulate a good amount of multi time with the Pro-Pilot Program and the cost of living is more bareable than If I were to follow my flying dreams in Hawaii. I chose to leave my island paradise to follow my dream here in Texas. I also chose Texas cause I have some family here in the Metroplex area. All and all its working for me. The instructors, maintainers, and the owner are good people and Kellwolf ( Steve ) is going to be a great addition to the crew. Hopefully by the time you come Steve would have gotten all the time he needs and will be heading out to an airline and I would have all my ratings and could take his void...LOL...

and maybe I could be your CFI and work my way out the door as well...hahaha..anyhow I hope you decide to come to SkyMates..Its a great place..oh not to mention I got great feed back from Steve about SkyMates..Thanks Steve!!

Seriously though, thanks for the kind words. I'll see ya next week.

Hey Steve..it's true though..man I better get some sleep it's going to be a busy day tomorrow, I may solo x-cross country to Corsicana ? Depends on WX. Me and Brad went this afternoon, thunderstorms relented..got lucky, but at least it was a bit cooler today. Or we may do another dual x-country down to Stephenville, Clark (SEP) Muni for lunch to grind on some ribs!! Brad said I have to pay for the lunch..LOL..that's fine with me. My wife wants me to get a dogie bag to go..LOL..

See ya next week man..

Man I hope the storm goes ahead and pass through. I am suppose to be going to Stephenville for some BBQ tonight myself.

Like everyone else has said, Skymates is a great place to train and work. I still consider Skymates my second home, although I didn't end up working there. If it wasn't for the owner at Skymates, I wouldn't have ended up having the job I have now. And if it wasn't for me getting so many hours where I am now, I would still be trying to get hired at Skymates.

If you don't mind me asking, KLB. WHy weren't you hired at Skymates?

Thanks for the responses, folks! Keep them coming!

Man! I was in the middle of responding to your post and lightning struck and the internet went dead. So I'll try it again. I only got my CMEL, CFII, and MEI from Skymates. I had all of the other certificates and ratings before I got there. I was the next person in line to get hired when I was there but business was a bit slow when I was done with my training. I guess the owner of Skymates and the owner of Pro Aircraft are pretty cool with each other because, I was called by the owner of Pro Aircraft and offered a job off of a referral from Luca about a week after I finished all of my training at Skymates. I still may try convince Luca to let me do some multi stuff on the side there.

Maybe Ryan can help me with that?

Thx. KLB!

I am still undecided between Skymates and Ari Ben. They seem pretty similar in many ways and both seem to get good reports from people. The opportunity to instruct afterwards is big factor. Whoever I decide to go with, I'll be doing ALL my licenses there.

Decisions..decisions...

I can tell you DFW has about 15 or so flight schools and there are plenty of job opportunities around. You are pretty much guaranteed a job at Skymates and they will do the best they can to get you work elsewhere if they couldn't hire you right off the bat. It's only a matter of time before the instructor ahead of you moves up and out.

Good Luck!

Right now I'm looking at the end of next summer as my time to begin flight training. Hopefully, airlines are still hiring then and instructors are getting some good jobs. That should open up some instructing spots.

Thx again for your responses, KLB.

Haven't really had time to post with all the crap that's been going on, but come check out Skymates. This place rocks it.

Eh, it's hot and majority right wing. All in all, I think I'd rather be....well, I guess where I have a job, which would be here. Dangit.

It can be pretty humid. Most of the weather here comes from the gulf of mexico. So it is not only hot, it is hot as hell here.

Suprisingly, it is not as strongly right winged as I thought it would be. I actually still see some John Kerry bumper stickers on peoples cars.

Anyways Clinton/Obama 2009

Uh, what are we electing in 2009?

It's not as humid as FL, but it's not as dry as Vegas. That heat in Vegas feels great coming from a swampy, humid environment.
