Influencers are destroying aviation

I’ve had a couple “oops, that was dumb!” social media moments and at this point anything with a work airplane in it gets run through the “what would the boss think?” Filter like 4 times, by which point I usually decide it’s not worth it.
Not that I ever take pictures while flying (at work), but if I did I certainly wouldn’t post said pictures on social media! I must be getting old.

Methinks this boils down to a "can-you-fly-and-chew-gum-at-the-same-time" kind of thing. And, you know, for a lot of the newbie pilots who are obsessed with "sharing" their flight experiences, the answer to that question is all too often "No".

I think we get to see and do some cool stuff and I enjoy sharing it with others. I think there’s a big difference between “look at these northern lights I got to see” vs “here’s a selfie of me in my uniform pretending to program the box.”

“Here’s me obviously on short final in sterile cockpit hyper-saturated with a story of sim sketchy stuff we did on the way in….posted from Chile while on reserve”

I have a problem with the title of this topic.

Sure, there are stupid people posting stupid crap on stupid media.

But the vast majority is not doing this kind of silly and unsafe stuff and/or posting them on youtube. Would you say that every motorbike driver rides at 250mph in traffic and post it online?

The fact is that there are way waaay more people posting legit aviation stuff online that are good for the community's future. More so that folks in this forum are ready to aknowledge. People like Martin Pauly, or Citation Max, Pilot2Pilot, or even Hasard Lee. Heck, what about those spotters streaming live for hours on end at airports like LAX, JFK, DFW, LHR with viewerships well in the thousands (again, live!). It's good for the community because they keep the young people interested in what we do.

Here, in this very forum there was a thread about coming with ideas to bring young people to aviation before it dries out. I swear some of you are some of the worst gatekeepers, even worse than those old farts in flightsim.

You want younger generations to come closer? Well, they watch videos online in social media. They no longer use Private Pilot or Flying mag to calm their aviation itch. Or a Janes encyclopedia. Welcome to the XXI century.

There was a dumbass in a Private Jets Facebook group who live streamed himself flying around at 300 knots below 10k. Same guy also took off with gear pins in. Smoking hole waiting to happen.
Please tell me it was in a matte black G-V. Gear pins gentlemen, if you're sitting in the right seat they and the checklists are paramount. Or not and everyone hates you.

Of course, that was my point.

Some people need 'live' validation now.

I've been in the industry long enough to get anxiety about when work comes up because here are my next few answers if someone is able to convince me to say the airline business:

1. Nah, I don't know that guy
2. I have no idea what that ticket should cost
3. Yes, no, nah, we really don't think Sully is a god.
4. Yeah, that really doesn't surprise me, but i really don't ride (airline). anyway.
5. No, civilian. Skyway. They're dead now. Region…errr… commuters back then.
6. Yes. At leas 24-ish hours, sometimes up to 72. Somedays, but often I just wander around aimlessly alone because I enjoy not talking work on a layover.

“Hey! I know a guy is the Air Force.”

Who? (Figuring someone who flew the same planes I did in the same timeframe)

“He was a missile launch officer in a silo in Montana his whole career. John Smith. You know him? He was in the Air Force just like you!”

(Sigh)

Ironically, paying attention to slowing below 250 before descending below 10k, or not actually accelerating above 250, are things I have to place a few brain bytes towards, after nearly a decade and a half of being exempt from it.

When regionals paid poverty wages, they still filled seats. Nobody had staffing issues.

So today, when new hires make $100k, the barrier to entry is even lower.

It’s the “look at me” in your face stuff that is cringy from someone who’s been in the industry 15 minutes.

Same thing. Except the camera has been updated and now there are views and followers.

I don't watch really any of this, but I do enjoy this one youtube channel by a guy who is a newish UAL CA on the 76. He's so happy and excited about it, and it is good stuff to fall asleep to.

The “mylayoverlife” guy? I think that’s his name… I’ve run into him a few times coming home… nice enough to chat with but sheesh I wouldn’t want any of the attention from enthusiasts or management.

Yeah I think that is him. And 100%......no way in hell would I put myself out there in the way that any of these guys/gals do. This isn't really a criticism of those who do, cause whatever, it's cheap money if that is your thing. I happen to like this guy's general program, but that is because it is somewhat informative to a layman, and he's pretty positive. Not that he would have any reason not to be :)

Most companies have some photography or social media policy in place. I’ve watched a few of his videos and they seem fairly benign. But I agree about not wanting a target..

Lately it's been the "Look at me, I fly a 767 and I'm only 24! #blessed #yolo"
