Inevitability....

Last I knew Charlotte wasn't slot controlled so I don't know what exactly they'd be selling.

Good point- that was something I did not know.

I'm going on jumpseater rumors, here.

Thought: Maybe rumors like this are getting circulated to take a poke at stoke prices, etc, in order to weaken someone's leverage in a bargaining scenario of some sort?

I'd certainly not put that sort of activity beneath AMR.

AMR would be the 4th airline to try to boost their stock price with rumors of Airway's demise. Delta's business plan for most of 2004-2006 counted on Airways going away. Jetblue was planning on buying up their Airbus fleet at one point and United was planning on AAA disappearing as far back as 2002.

Why would any of these airlines want CLT? CVG & MEM are two airports not too far away that are probably begging for a huge airline to come in and invest in their dying airports.

Hell, those two airports would probably just give it away just to get em there!

Sure, the airports would want the business, but would the actual traffic flow from business in the community make the investment worthwhile?

From what I hear, CLT is doing much better than MEM or CVG in terms of overall industry these days.

I've never flown out of MEM, but I worked for DL out of CVG, back in the day circa 99-03. That place used to be a mini ATL, obviously to get that kind of traffic their had to be interest form the community.

DL shrunk CVG to spite CMR, and other possible considerations as well, like the impending merger with NWA. The city and local businesses didn't reject the airport, the airline decided to uproot.

Also, keep in mind that back in the day CVG was an AA hub.

MEM has long been an NWA stronghold, which means Delta owns it hardcore now. As far as CVG- I'm not saying the city disowned the airport- I'm saying that Delta disowned the city. I don't think they'd do it just to spite CMR, either. That's an awfully big shift just to spank a regional pilot group. I don't think that makes financial sense to do something like that purely out of spite, even as an 'example' made to other groups.

To roll in there (MEM or CVG) when DAL is flexing post-merger strength and bulk wouldn't seem quite so prudent to me. CLT is a little different, I think. I think everybody smells the blood in the water with USAir and everybody's leveraging off that.

AMR just fought tooth and nail to keep JAL in OneWorld, and away from DAL. I don't see them surrendering markets to DAL anytime soon- they know who their biggest competitor now is. I don't see them pushing headfirst into dominated markets, though. CLT's geography makes it ideal for making a run at MEM and CVG both in terms of market proximity and connectivity to the NorthEast and Florida connections.

Plus, I don't know how much of a fight USAir is in a position to put up by comparison, so the home turf wouldn't be as well defended.

Go figure. I guess it's just me they're out to get. Balls.

Eh, any given day, just about any airline can mess your luggage up..... Or other things :).. Just have to roll with the punches and not allow certain things to get you down.
