Income Tax Question

Does anybody have any information about education tax credits? Specifically, I know I can claim the regular school tuition, but what about all the flight costs? Since this is part of my "education" and degree requirements, it seems like I would be able to do this...

my understanding is that you may credit anything directly related to the certificate or degree. so since flying here in critical in receiving the degree (ie - not option) i would say yes, you can count it.

i plan to anyway.

Erik... good question. I'll ask my brother, he's a CPA. I need to know because I may have incorrectly filed my taxes as I only got the figures from the 1098T form.

I think it should be fair game since its a direct education expense that is required for your major.

Yeah! Let me know what your brother says. On my summer 1098T there was a note for aviation students to "contact Dotty for the 2005 flight expenses." So, this has me thinking that we could write these off.

Erik - Per my brother, YES you can include your flight costs, as long as they are a requirement for your education, which they are.

You may not get much or any of a return if you didn't make much money last year anyway...you may have gotten all your money back from Uncle Sam. I'm assuming you're working part time, unless you operate a multi-million dollar per month profit marijuana growing facility. :sarcasm:

I will be adjusting my tax returns right away!
