In your experience, why are some pilots are regionals “lifers?”

So much angst ;)

I explore what I want on my own time, what’s wrong with that? If the layover is long enough then I also get out and explore.

Keep in mind as a NY based guy for the last 5+ yrs, my layovers were almost always only SF or LA. That’s what one gets when all they do is a 2-day trip out of New York to California. Out and back. 2 overnights for 5 yrs srtaight. I had my filling of those 2 overnights and doing random explore stuff. Took buses to different places. Walked through a shady place called Inglewood (I know, I know, lesson learned). Etc. etc.

I never asked to work for the “PACNW regional” but they bought us and such is life. I make the best out of any given situation. But I’m not gonna walk away from my current job/pay/seniority to fly a widebody. I made it abundantly clear before that me leaving to start over at the big 3 would solely be for the NYC base. But now that I’m moving anyway, plus the usual disclaimer of don’t chase bases around, I’m staying out here and see what happens.

The best gig is living in base on reserve. For February I was called out for only trip, a 4-day. That was it the whole month.
I wouldnt leave if I were you either.

I like domestic RJ 3 day trips. I do really well waking up at 0500, every day of my life. I like being able to carry food with me, and I like having a nice, quiet, sedate and boring career. I like being a slam clicker and getting some rest while I'm at work, so I can be a more useful husband and father on my days off.

I would bid the 717 at delta and never leave. If I were at American, I'd bid the 190 and never leave.

Fight me.

My goal about the space program, at the time, was about something completely different.

Remember I grew up in a time where space shuttle launches were routine, we were on the moon and we were probably going to be on Mars before I was driving, BEYOND when I’d be of age.
Now we just loft electric crap boxes into orbit.

Wait, you drive one of ‘em. Never mind.

And then one day, you discover “Man, if my cellphone was powered by a gas generator in the age of high capacity batteries, why am I doing this again?” :)

Our future doesn’t include cars. Or it should include them less. Damn things and their parking lots and their highways are a blight, as far as I’m concerned, especially for urban planning.

I love mine, and I am confident that Elon Motors builds a fantastic carriage, but when you get right down to it I want to walk or train everywhere, and only get a ride when I absolutely need one.

All it takes is money to ride SpaceShip Two, or CrewDragon, or even Soyuz to someplace more interesting.
Well, I don’t have much of that, sadly. (If I did I doubt I’d want to ride any of those things. If I could have bought my way into the Shuttle, hell yes!)

Though Crew Dragon is admittedly the best of that lot.

I want to be able to press a button on my phone, have the thing drive itself to my front door, hop in it, drive it somewhere, hop out, press another button on my phone and have it disappear. And bill my credit card for my usage. And otherwise not think about it.

I hate paying for insurance and all the other things and would love a usage based car as a service model. I tolerate the care and feeding of my lesbian hatchback because it is fun to drive and a necessity given the current circumstances, but I’d really rather have the above.

Please tell me where I can sign up for that future. (Yes, am aware that there are services like that now, but marry that to a more autonomous technology and I’ll be right there yelling “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY”)

Maybe.

My car is 5 years old and I’ve only put about 36,000 miles on it. Some of that is the fact that for 2.5 of those years everything I needed was within a 10 mile radius; I fervently believe in minimizing my environmental impact through driving as little as is possible.

You know, the Model S knows your iPhone Calendar, will pretty much do exactly that depending on your jurisdiction.

profit sharing joke

I’m aiming more for “walkable neighborhoods” than for that. In fact, if I move out here I will probably sell the lesbaru.

I have a relative who was an Air Force heavy pilot. After he got out we went to work for United Airlines. But he was an engineer by training, and so after a couple of years, he quit and started his own manufacturing business. About 15 years later he sold it and retired. When I asked how much he sold it for, the reply was "We don't go into specifics over 20 million." I still don't know what he's worth, but I do know that he has owned and flown a couple of King Airs, a couple of Hawkers, at least one Pilatus, and is currently on his second Phenom 300. He's also owned a Bonanza throughout.

So, I guess my question to you legacy "lifers" is; Why don't you want to move up? Life's better as a retired multi-millionaire, you know.
because I'm the meat actuating control surfaces and not an engineer. That sounds like actual work.

I live in a neighborhood where you basically only have to cross one road (max) in order to get to all the various centers, shopping, etc. Traipsed with sidewalks, tunnels and even single track if you want to MTB down to the grocery store for bacon. But still you’ll see SUV’s stacked up at the bus stop to pick up their kids and drive them home a block away.

Ungh.

Because that sounds like terrible work, and this job is fun, doesn’t feel like work. As my wife says “You don’t have a job, you have a hobby you get paid for”. With that said we are in the exploratory phase of starting a small business but it won’t be millions producing. Just something fun for some extra flow of $$.
