In your experience, why are some pilots are regionals “lifers?”

How do you respond to the “I’m good enough to fly their express/connection passengers, but not mainline.”

I mean from a purely customer service standpoint, they got a point.

Tell them that when they are in charge of hiring at mainline, they can take that into consideration. Until then, it is the airline's pilot hiring office that makes the requirements and up to applicants to meet those requirements.

You must admit that it is almost a ridiculous point, at least one that Heller might laugh at, to be rejected by Brand Z while flying a jet that has their colors on it, with their passengers in back.

Of course it’s ridiculous.

But the people doing the hiring and training at Brand Z unfortunately have minimal if any say in the level of outsourcing, so it’s really not them toward which the head-scratching should be directed.

Last I checked, 2/3 of that board had something to say about the outsourcing in the form of votes regarding their CBA.

But I shall concede the point in the spirit of not giving a good goddamn.

Looking from the outside it vexes me. On the one hand, I get the QOL choices which lead a pilot to stay where they are rather than move up. I've several times made them in my career. But, on the other hand, if you're going to get on the 121 conveyor, you should take it as far as you can. That's the career progression and set of trade-offs you signed up for by going 121. And while nothing's certain anywhere in this business, the lower you are on that career ladder, the greater your chances of getting burned.

Out of genuine curiosity, how many of them had a say back when the cat was let out of the bag?

Being ‘good enough to fly your customers at a regional’ is a fairly useless blanket statement. This isn’t The Right Stuff, hiring teams are not evaluating your current job, don’t decide which regional flies what, and whether or not you would be ‘good enough’ does not answer whether you will be a sick time liability or just a general richard to sit next to on a 12 day trip.

Also remember a large part of hiring teams are pilots and probably would be very happy to have all scope brought in house.

I don't know, I was in a legacy jump seat a couple months ago and the subject of scope came up. FO, who fully admitted that scope had destroyed his career, said he'd vote in scope relief for the right price.

#facepalm

Absolutely.

It's not like going off on a recruiter about not meeting mainline's requirements but flying for a regional that flies the same passengers is going to make him (or her) run back to the office and report "I've got someone angry and frustrated about our minimum requirements!" Besides, mainline only has control over the process for itself, it's not like they're running around dictating hiring practices at the regionals. It'd be nice though.

Like Arianna Grande sings, "Thank you, next".

Complaining about the way things are gets me nowhere. Even if the way things are is stupid and needs to change.*

*Currently have nothing to complain about. Just sayin ;)

Are they even really "the same passengers" though? I bet corporate values transcon and transatlantic passengers more than they value the guy flying to MOT, MLI or IMT.

Absolutely.
