In need of advice/opinions

In the late 70's my friend and I were both pursuing the same woman, he was winning. His first date was a fly to dinner date. She was in awe as he did the walk around of the PA-28 140. After they got in the plane I sneaked out and reattached the tail tie down.

Maybe that's why he doesn't fly for an airline?

So how did the pursuit end?

Hell, I know a chief pilot that failed to get the GPU disconnected from a Lear and taxied all the way out to the runway with the GPU in tow. We ALL do stupid moves from time to time.

I've done way, WAY worse than this, and never got fired.

If I had to guess, they're thinning the heard and looking for ANY reason to get rid of somebody.

If we had a dollar for everyone who "went flying" in a full motion simulator with the GPU still hooked to the airplane we could have one heck of a big party.

Sim airplanes use GPUs? How do you get them into the building? Do you have special extra wide doors to accommodate?

OP, you are clearly a liability. Do you have any idea how much it is to replace those 15 year old dry and brittle ropes out on the ramps? Dollars! Dollars with zero at the end of it! Hell a whole set of rope for one tie down can run you up to 15 bucks. I simply can't see how they could let you keep working with that kind of track record.

I broke an airplane once...ok maybe more than once. Had a student who was real jerky on the controls. Was trying to demonstrate a point about it and I ended up being not jerky enough. Ended up not correcting fast enough and had a tail strike on landing. Messed all up the bottom of the rudder. Also blew out a main tire in a 310 trying to do a simulated "carrier landing."

Well, one of the Academy's (hint) selling points is a possible instructor position. I talked to some friends in the main base in Florida (another hint) and they said they're firing people left and right at any excuse to make room for new graduates, as few and far between as those are. I believe my experience can exemplify that.

This, however, is no excuse for my lack of complete attention in this case. I should have never given them a reason.
can't fire an independant contractor....oh right!

I know of some people who have Gear up'ed and nothing ever happened.
I know of one who crashed into trees ifr and pulled out, then flew it to the home airport 50 miles away, instead of the airport 6 miles behind them, and still kept their job!

At a FL based company...

Sir, if I just crashed into trees and was able to keep flying as well, I would fly home. That says to me I am indestructible and a badd ass.

Yes! I think I know that guy! Wasn't he the same one who ran a 172 dry on a "1344-1/2" flight and flipped it in a field...only to find out the left tank was still full?

don't know that story...
I do know he was lucky that he only ever turned one direction on the way home.. on the ground they tried turning the ailerons in the other direction, and they stuck in place!

That guy should have purchased a lottery ticket. Then again, maybe all of his luck was used up.

He was out of SAC before you arrived...he was one of the instructors while I was a student, and this happened before I arrived...

So glad I read this thread this morning. I had a rough flight last night (wasn't paying attention to little details, IE. Turning the fuel pump off after switch tanks, etc...)

I actually forgot to turn my lights on before departure and had someone in an operations vehicle radio me about it. Got home and was beating myself up about it.

I guess we all make stupid mistakes, and the main thing is to learn from them. You better know the next time I go flying, making sure i have the appropriate lighting for the time of day will always be one of those things I double check.

Actually, if you look at any simulator building, you will find at least one very large door. I'm not sure if that is how they get the GPU in and out though. It's usually so dark I can't see what is going on out on the ramp.

Regarding the old worn ropes on ramps, my understanding from a class I attended is that FBOs have removed ropes for their own liability protection. If a rope breaks and a customer's airplane is damaged, the FBO get sued. If there is no rope there in the first place, it is the customer's responsibility to supply a rope. It is one of those things that you just don't notice until someone points it out to you, but sure enough, that seems to be the case. When I started flying, every tie-down spot had ropes. Now, it is just the opposite.

Ah. The guy I know of was the student in said incident and went on to instruct at another school on the field...

Hello, all! I've recently had a series of unfortunate events occur to me and I'm very curious to hear others' opinions on my situation....

If the tie down could break with out you knowing it was tied down, was the airplane ever really tied down? The rope was no good anyway.

This is such a minor thing that I wouldn't even think to "report" it to MGMT.
My boss would laugh, the chief flight instructor would probably give me another nickname for it and the line guy would give me crap as he tied another rope down.
Best of luck in your future job hunt. It really shouldn't affect you.
