Err.. Midair collision? The rope may have hit his prop, but it didn't actually stop his engine (the pilot did that before pulling the chute). Probably the prop sliced through it. There was no structural damage to the airplane prior to the parachute pull.

Can't you hear? You can hear the cable hitting the aircraft. The airplane tumbled and he knew he only had a thousand feet. How was he to know something wasn't damaged.

Actually I think the Kraut did a pretty good job of staying calm, pulling the 'chute and announcing it on the radio.
