Impossible Turn AOPA ASF Video

Good move! I'm gonna try that in the pa44 sim. both engines out. How high was he when it quit?
 
This has long been the subject of much debate, books, and articles.

At what point is a critical/safe turn around altitude, what bank angle to be used, flaps/no flaps, gear timing, and which direction (left/right) should a pilot exercise.

Feel free to open a discussion about any.

Yeah, at one point you see him turn past an open field that seems in range. Granted, there was snow on it, but that seemed like the more logical option. Glad it worked out for him.

I thought the part about saving his engine from more damage was interesting. I could see that going through my head as well - which is the wrong mindset to have.

I heard the kings once make a comment on one off their training videos about not putting out the flaps in a gear up off field landing. With the flaps out (and gear up) it might cause more damage to the airplane...who stinking cares...Im all about not causing more damage to the people inside the airplane!
 
Sign up- it's free and if you're a CFI you should do those courses periodically to stay fresh. The weatherwise interactive courses are awesome. If you're a student, supplement your reading with this stuff to gain a different perspective on things.

As an aside, and very relevant, I had an engine failure in a 152 this year and glided into the airport. Turns out, we popped a cylinder. Feds came and the first thing they asked was if I had attended any safety courses recently or had any recent checkrides. I told him I did the ASF courses and printed him out a transcript of the ones I had done and they were quite impressed.
 
They discuss that at the very beginning of the video. He installed a camera in the plane to catch a night approach somewhere.
