Impact of Automation on Situational Awareness

Fellow pilots, I am working on a Graduate Capstone Project through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on the Impact of Automation on Situational Awareness in Multi-crew Flight Operations.

Your responses to my survey on fluidsurveys.com will provide me with valuable statistical data for my research. They survey can be accessed at http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/deepak-gajre/automation-and-sa/

I plan to share the results of this study on this forum, in addition to my graduate capstone project to pilots that provide their e-mail address on the last question of the survey.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or post on this thread. Thank you for your time!

I started to fill out the survey, but as I was reading the questions, they really don't address where the deficiencies are in the automated environment, in my opinion.

The way the questions were worded, it was impossible to pick a true answer. Even a "best answer" to your questions, I felt, were incorrect, which is why I didn't submit my survey.

I do think this is a very important topic to study. Automation management will require a shift in pilot thinking and workload management to those new to the environment.

Mind you, you can select what level of automation you want in most airplanes.

If you responded to the survey, thank you!

Yes, the survey is anonymous and you don't have to provide your e-mail address, unless you want to receive a copy of my graduate capstone project by e-mail.

Please note that I can use only data from pilots that currently fly an automated aircraft (FMS + full EFIS) and are part of a flight crew on a US FAA Part 121 or scheduled air carrier.

Polar742 - Thank you for your input. Many questions on my survey are based on years of research on automation and situational awareness. The purpose of this survey is not to gather deficiencies in automation, but to gather data on what pilot's think of automation and situational awareness. I have over 30 pages of information on review of relevant literature on my graduate capstone project which talk about deficiencies and other issues related to automation and SA.

PGT - Thank you for your input. Yes, you can select the level of automation you want in most airplanes, but in an automated air carrier aircraft with FMS, EFIS, ECAM/EICAS, pilots don't shut these systems off.

Thank you to those that responded to the survey.

I need a minimum of 10 more pilots. If you haven't taken the survey yet, and could when you have a moment, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Boris Badenov is the resident JC expert on the Impact of Autamotion On Situational Awareness....Qgar, Jtrain, Surreal, Waco, MkeD, CalCapt and myriad others are indebted to his insights on this crucial matter.

Doug Taylor used to dabble in this, but he is "following his muse" as a intern sports announcer--so you have to leave the boss out of it.

Cordially,

Thanks. Hopefully Boris will take the survey in that case. :) I still need 4 more pilots flying automated aircraft!

I started the survey, but it's asking me about my current aircraft. I don't currently fly anything automated, but I am furloughed from a company where I was flying an automated airplane. I have about 600 hours in an ERJ, so I figured I might pipe in my thoughts for what they're worth. Should I submit it, or no?

Yes, please submit. :)

I filled out the survey, I have a couple thousand hours in RJ's but my current ride is the most antiquated airliner around.

Data Collection for this research has ended. I have responses from 31 pilots flying Type 2 automated aircraft. I expect to have the graduate research project (GRP) completed by April 21st. I'll post the results on this thread and send a PDF file of the GRP to pilots that submitted their e-mail addresses on the survey. Thank you for participating is this study.

Update:

This project has been completed and is currently pending review from the committee team at Embry-Riddle. :D I expect it to be ready for distribution sometime next week.

Can you point me to any of Boris' posts on this topic? I am surprised I missed them. What has he done to be considered the "resident expert"?

Can you follow up with a survey on how Beasly's Avatar affects situational awareness?... I'm pretty sure I missed every post after that.
