I'm out

Patent Attorney's rarely see court, and yes they need a certain degree in a science field, most have some type of engineering degree. I think they even have to take a special patent bar exam as well on top of the regular state bar.

I'm 100% with Tony on this JH. And I agree with what Stan said too. I know you feel like you have thought it out but don't do the quick bailout. Call me if you want. -C

I guess I've got to agree with Tony, Stan, and Ophir on this one. Stick it out a little longer, you've made it this far you can't give up yet. Give it at least a couple of months--if it still feels wrong, then walk away.

Personally, this career is not what I thought it would be, and nearly every pilot I've talked to has felt the same way. There's ALOT I really, really, don't like right now about my career and have felt burnt out and ready to quit--which really bums me out because this is what I've wanted to do my whole life. For now I'm gonna just keep plugging away, look at the positives and if it's not meant to be, down the road I'll know I gave it an honest effort.

My brother is a Patent Attorney. His Undergraduate Degree is Civil Engineering. In addition to passing the State Bar Exam, he had to pass a Patent Bar exam. He rarely sees a courtroom.

He does not have black fingernails or pink hair.

Is it true they make around the $500k mark?

No, more like $80k to $120K to start, topping out at about $150k to $200k.

Varies a ton depending on the geographic market.

The only lawyers that make $500k would be VERY senior partners at big firms, or litigators that work on big contingent fee cases.

I know a lawyer who paints his fingernails black, has multiple piercings and is a "goth". A patent attorney in Atlanta!
not anymore he doesn't...he's as straight laced as they come now!

actually, he has an english degree. But, he was in the top 4% in his class...so that may have something to do with it also.

Click on the General Requirements Bulletin to practice patent law, the PDF file, This is the United States Patent and Trademark Office. To Practice as a patent attorney you have to pass their test, which is commonly referred to as the "patent bar." Its on pages 4 and 5. From what I read it looks like he probably got an exemption of some kind, probably for being smart.

ok, i missed the patent part of doug's previous statement.. he's actually an intellectual property lawyer.

he is pretty darn smart and will probably become a patent attorney because that's where he'd like to end up..but anyways...

Sounds like your regreting marrying a pilot...hahaha!

True. The guy was sitting there reading an industry paper as he was having dinner with us.

I still remember the days when we'd get blitzed at the "Redneck Christmas" parties and stay out late in Orlando.

Now he's just a barrister.

Can't believe I missed this

I really do seem to fall off the earth for a week at a atime when I am working.

John, You are a good hearted guy. We certainly don't see eye to eye on many things but I completely understand this one. Grabo said it right. There ismuch more to a flying job than flying 120 people from here to there. Right now, I am working on my CFI ratings. I figure I will CFI for fun. I don't need the money but I love to teach and I love to fly. What a grat combo. Maybe it will get old maybe not. I tell you what really gets me rev'ed is watching the guy with the PItts at my airport fly. Man I would love to get into that stuff. Someday...

I hate to see you get into anything political. I think you know how little respect I have for any politician and they will get to you sooner or later. You are a smart kid ( don't mean to be condescending) and you are gonna go far in life. What you need to do is come one and do a tour of the South East. Make a stop in Charleston then go to Nasville and see that marine sissy that posts on here sometimes... :) Then head to Tampa.

Wish you the best of luck. You still got your blog?

Please, please, don't work for ATP! They're horrible!
Don't ask the current employees on here- they're too afraid to tell the truth because they know management reads this board. .

HAHA, there is some truth to that.

John, I remember back in the day (a couple years ago now, geez) when we were both so wired about this gig of flying. I would have NEVER dreamed of giving it up to back to the corporate world. It's a funny thing how life makes its turns. One thing I've learned is never say never.

Best of luck to you John in whatever you decide. Just remember, you're not the only one who's decided there's more to life than flying.

Woohoo, one less person to compete with.;) :bandit:

Just kidding JH. I wish you the best of luck. Keep in touch and let us know what you are doing in life. I know you'll still be vocal on JC and the "Liberal let me keep my liberties" crap:cwm27: will keep coming. You're a good guy and I know you'll do great things in life. I feel like I'm writing an obituary. Go enjoy life and enjoy flying.

I also agree with Shooter...I fell off the earth and look what's happened since I've been at work. Oh well.

Is it hard to become a public defendant, I would imagine they get paid well. Also my friends a Lawyer and has his own practice. Said it was a lot of work to start but he loves it. Home by 5:30 every night.
