There is a point where it gets to low, I agre with this, 250 hours is the absolute lowest they can go and I don't agree with it. 500 hours does seem acceptable to me, in my expierence though.

When I do get hired on by somebody, I just hope that I will have set myself up in the best situation possible for a low-time hire. I'll be honest and say that I hope to take advantage of the hiring frenzy going on.

why not? you want to talk truth right? let's talk truth...250 hr guys now want to move straight from CFIing/learning/timebuilding to flying a jet with passengers....the point of the thread is things like that shouldn't happen because they're not READY to be in command at low hours like that...the point of the thread is to try and change folks perspective to help raise the bar, get better QOL, pay and experience in both and left and right seat. The point is, people who were at 500hr and got hired learned a valuable lesson and are admitting that they were not ready for the responsibility even though they thought they were. at least that's my understanding...

Some things you just can not learn until you are put through the grinder and experience them 1st hand. I personally think that there is a gap between the knowledge/experience required by a certain task/job and what the hiring standards facilitate. Let’s say that Joe pilot with 250hrs is equal to a Private in the Army. Joe Pilot works his way up to 500hrs, good for him! Now he has more experience and “Time in Service” he gets promoted to PFC (Private 1st Class). Having Joe Pilot now move up into FO status is somewhat similar to asking a PFC in the Army to take command of an entire Platoon. There would be a HUGE deficiency in the qualifications of the PFC to effectively lead a Platoon.
Now do I think that this is 100% correct, no. That dang bell shaped curve screws that all up. Some people will be able to step up to the challenge and do very well.


It is hard for me to get pissed at anyone for doing what they believe is in their best interest. All I can ask is that they understand the consequences.

Just for the record, though, in spite of what you've heard, APC isn't in the same catagory as FI and doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence. I work tirelessly over there to make it a better place. You should check it out for yourself if you think FI and APC come across the same.
