I'm going for it...

After much deliberation, Ive decided to peruse a career in ATC. I finally got a chance to check out CCBeaverC. I wasn't impressed with CCBC's main campus but the aviation building at the airport was very cool. I talked to Jim Scott and he was very helpful. He answered all of my questions and gave me a tour of the facility. He settled my biggest concern; job placement after I get my CTI. I then saw the Control Tower at the airport and had a chance to talk to an ex-student who was working the radio. Over all, it was a pretty good meeting.

I'll only be taking 2 non aviation classes while I'm there. I'm going to get my PPL here in northern VA. As a result, I'll only be at CCBC for 3 semester or 11 months.

Thanks to all of you who helped me figure all of this out. I would not have been able to do this without all of your help and first hand experience. You guys made this happen. I've never seen anything like the community you guys got here.

That was my exact thought when I pulled up to the main campus, "I just drove two hours to see this dump." But the facilities at the airport are very cool. Jim Scott was fun to talk to, I got to go in and observe one of the enroute classes, and he even took me in the terminal room and turned on one of the scopes. There were also a couple cute chicks working the tower the day I went.

Ha after a 5 hour drive, ccbc did look like a dump. Luckely for me, Ill only have 2 classses there. Mr Scott did show me both the enroute and terminal labs as well as the flight simulators. very cool stuff. When i got to the top of the CT it was just 3 guys :( . however I had a good 20 minute talk with one of the guys there. i apoligize for the crappy spelling and the odd formating as im typing this on my small phone keybord :(

CCBC has a great ATC program, so I've heard. I'm actually going to be heading back to CCBC part time after I graduate Penn State because they have insanely cheap flight training...a 40% subsidy for Pennsylvania residents. You might was to check into that if you're still interested in getting your ratings. I'm not sure how long you have to be a resident to qualify for the subsidy, though. Word of advice: Beaver County has its nice spots, especially the rural areas...but the urban areas are DEAD and decaying. Take the time to drive to Allegheny County/Pittsburgh if you are looking for something to do. If you like hiking/outdoors stuff, there's two parks within very close driving distance: Raccoon Creek State Park and Tomlinson Run (just over the border in WV).

You know I might have to take the time and make the hour drive up to CCBC. Its one of the few schools I have yet to actually visit with an aviation program.

I got lost going out there and ended up in Aliquippa. Strange little ghetto in the middle of nowhere...

If you need some advice in what areas to look for apartments in Beaver County I live right down the road from the airport in Beaver Falls. There are certain areas such as the aforementioned Aliquippa that you want to stay far away from. But the area around the airport is a safe and quiet community.

Good luck. I live in Alexandria, VA. I did not even know that there were any aviation schools in MD. Keep us posted with you experience.

UM Eastern Shore, but its a little suspect when I visited.

Congrats on the decision. Make sure you have enough funds to get through the flight training, as it is very expensive.
