IFR @ Shebles Aviation

Just a quick question..

I know their IFR course is quick; 10 days from start to finish. That, in itself, might not be the best idea. But, I'm going to take an 8 week IFR ground class @ a Part 141 school and then plan on going there due to the overall cost being about half. Is this a good idea or should I stick it out @ Part 141?

I would say don't go to the quick route, its not worth it.
Yes, you get the same information, and you may pass the checkride with flying colors, but simply put, you won't retain it. We learn by repetition, muscle memory, and procedures. There is simply not enough time in those 10 days for one to "retain" all the information, and to practice everything you need to know enough to make it stick. Its more or less like "cramming" before the test.. you get it down and pass, but if you dont use it practically daily for a while after, out of the window it goes..
If you want to do it faster than average, hunker down and study your books, then go the regular route. You can still get done quick, just not 10 days, and you'll remember it.

I believe you can "rush" some ratings. However, I don't believe you should ever rush the IFR rating. You should take as much time on the IFR rating as you can stand and afford. There are a lot of hours needed between your private ticket and your commercial multi. You should use as many of those hours as possible for your IFR instead of flying all over trying to "time build". The IFR is the most important rating you will ever have.

By the way this is not meant to be a bad reflection of Shebles. They are a good company for finish up ratings and I have recommended Shebles to folks that have 80% of what they need and just need that other 20% to get through.

I have flown with three "instrument rated" pilots from that place. They were good pilots but needed A LOT of additional work to be competent instrument pilots. Not one of them had ever been in actual...

They train you to pass a checkride with an in-house examiner. It is what it is...
