At the airlines, when do the pilots call for IFR clearence? Durning or before boarding? Or after the door is closed and the a/c is ready to go.

FlyChicaga said:Lately I've been flying to a lot of PDC-equipped airports (my last trip every airport had D-ATIS and PDC), but I'll usually grab the clearance after I've done the cockpit pre-flight checks, my walkaround, and reviewed the paperwork. I'll put the flight plan in the FMS, initialize our ACARS, input the basic weight and balance information, get ATIS, then call for clearance after that. On a quick turn, it's about 10-15 minutes before departure. Don't want to wait too long in case we have a expect-departure-clearance-time (EDCT), but I also want to make sure the flight plan and aircraft are good-to-go before picking up the clearance.

I figure the Captain has plenty of things to worry about during boarding, I can do the busy work of typing on the FMS and ACARS. I am pretty fast with it anyways.
