IFR Clearence question

At the airlines, when do the pilots call for IFR clearence? Durning or before boarding? Or after the door is closed and the a/c is ready to go.

Happy New Year!

Many airlines and most airports now have PDC, pre-departure clearance. The clearance is received through ACARS and no radio call is made to the airport until pushback time when ramp control or ground control is called. The electronic PDC is received sometime during boarding or even before. If there is no electronic PDC then a radio call would be made during boarding sometime.

By the time the door is closed there's usually less than five or ten minutes to go until pushback which can happen when everyone is seated.

The clearence becomes available 30 mins prior to scheduled departure time. I get it as soon as possible.

I'm not an airline guy, but when I fly PAX and I'm pushing a tight schedule, I'll sometimes get my clearance after I park, before I even shut down to load.

:):) But maybe, just maybe - I can fly a really nice CRJ and wear a uniform. Then, if I'm lucky . . .

Are you coming down with Shiny Jey Syndrome :D?

Lately I've been flying to a lot of PDC-equipped airports (my last trip every airport had D-ATIS and PDC), but I'll usually grab the clearance after I've done the cockpit pre-flight checks, my walkaround, and reviewed the paperwork. I'll put the flight plan in the FMS, initialize our ACARS, input the basic weight and balance information, get ATIS, then call for clearance after that. On a quick turn, it's about 10-15 minutes before departure. Don't want to wait too long in case we have a expect-departure-clearance-time (EDCT), but I also want to make sure the flight plan and aircraft are good-to-go before picking up the clearance.

So if your doing all that grunt work...whats the captain doing? Asleep in his chair?

:sarcasm:

To be honest, I usually try to input all that information, then hand them the paperwork back to verify it was inputed correctly. I figure the Captain has plenty of things to worry about during boarding, I can do the busy work of typing on the FMS and ACARS. I am pretty fast with it anyways.

I try to make the Captains life as easy as I can most of the time.

Isn't that what it's all about?

I remember filling the Platoon gude billet in the Corps once, training the new guy.

Him: "So, what's your job?"
Me: "Do whatever I can before the Platoon Sergeant gets here"
Him: "So, you're doing all the work?"
Me: "If I'm on top of things!"
Him: "That's silly - where's the benefit in that?"
Me: "Well, if I do it right, I might get to be the Platoon Sergeant one day!!"

That's how I operated as an FO. Now ... about 5% of my FOs do that. Rather frustrating.

You get the clearance whenever you want. During boarding, we're just sitting up there doing nothing, so it's not like there a rush of things to do.
