IFR Clearance and the Garmin 530

Hey all!

I'm gonna be flying a smaller aircraft on Monday and I'm most likely going to be flying IFR. For this flight I think I am going to have a pretty long list of VOR's and INT's to enter into the G530. Now I'm used to plugging J+V airways in a computer with their corresponding VOR's, so really my concern is a matter of convenience. My questions is this...is there any software or app available out there so that when I get my IFR clearance from delivery, I can just insert the cleared route into said software/app which will expand that route string into a list off all the waypoints i should enter into the GPS? (As opposed to whipping out the the charts and having to review and insert every single point).

Maybe a corporate/135 guy can help me out as we usually never see the "cleared as filed" offering from atc

But if anyone knows anything that could help, then by all means...say so :)

If you use fltplan.com to file you'll usually get an expected clearance so it will give you a heads up if there are any expected changes. I will normally print out the flight plan and insert it in the GPS and if any changes occur I can amend it before departure.

If you use fltplan.com, after planning out your flight at the bottom of the flight plan there will be a garmin flight plan link. Open that link and save it to an SD card as a .fpl file. After doing this take the SD card and plug it into a USB data card programmer (can be purchased from Garmin), you will also have to download flight plan migrator off of the garmin site (free). Select the FPL button, select your flight plan from the flight plan list, and select import. Then if need be you can you can make changes before departure.

He's on on Long Island only place he would be given direct to is the Azores.

Thats the truth, the only people who get as filed or direct are the 121 guys @ JFK. Everyone else has to suffer. I remember waiting 1hr @the runway at KBDR just to get IFR back into KFRG, it was rediculous!!!!!

Anyways, Thanks for the info you guys, thats why I love this place! Take care and safe flying!

I fly outa FRG and I get cleared as filed often. Most of the routing that is issued is canned, (for instance file BDR-FRG as BDR v44 DPK and you will probably get it) unless wx pops up and shuts down your route. Use FLTplan.com, look at the list of routes previously given and file as such. 1 hr before ETA FLTplan will give you the expected routing that is from ATC and then just open the chart and write down all the waypoints. It can change, but its usually accurate.

I've never understood why a GPS doesn't have a place to insert a thumb drive where one could load a flight plan.
