IFR BFR?

If you're instrument current, does your BFR need to cover instrument procedures and hoodwork? My CFI says no, but that made me wonder.

If you stay current with your approaches, holds, and tracking, do you ever need to cover IFR in your BFR? Do you ever need to do an IPC in addition to the BFR if you're instrument current? I feel like a dumba$$ asking these currency questions, but I don't have a copy of the FARs with me at work and I wonder if I should be calling my instructor to add an IPC to my upcoming BFR...
 
You need a BFR to exercise the priveleges of your pilot certificate. You need instrument currency to exercise the privelges of your instrument rating. They are different things. You don't even need an instrument rating to exercise the privelges of your pilot cert, so you do not need to do anything for instrument currency on your BFR.
 
Flyguy's right. The BFR is to keep the currency of your pilot cert. You can keep instrument current on your own (or with a safety pilot if need be). You only need an IPC if your instrument currency is extremem lapsed. That being said, the CFI CAN throw instrument stuff into the BFR if the pilot is instrument rated.
 
If I was doing a BFR with an instrument rated pilot I would definately thrown in an approach into the home airport. It makes the BFR more complete, only adds an additional 10 minutes, and covers myself in case the pilots crashes the next day flying IFR. That's just my opinion though.

That's what I do on a BFR. A simple no failure aproach to your home airport should be no problem.

if that guy goes out tomorrow and crashes on the same approach you and he flew... how did your arbitrarily adding it to his BFR protect YOU? I'd say you are EXPOSING yourself!

Remember you are reviewing his use of his CERTIFICATE, not his instrument RATING.

When I was CFI-ing alot (CFI-I also), I never mixed the two. I gave BFR sign offs to folks who were not instrument current. That is ok, because the FARS are clear on the difference.

[/ QUOTE ]Hmmm. I don't know about yours, but my certificate =includes= an instrument rating. And I know a whole bunch of pilots who's use of their certificates include instrument flight.

The BFR is entirely separate from the IPC. Every BFR should include some hood work...but I would not normally include Instrument procedures. If the pilot wanted to brush up on Instrument procedures or complete an IPC...I would do it on a separate flight. There's too much to cover on each event.

Having said that...I'm sure there are instructors out there who would conduct each event simultaneously. There's no law against it.
